I sold ds's old netbook a few weeks back, new/other because it had been opened but not used. its not powerful enough for him to play games etc on, so we gave him our old laptop.

anyway, I've received a message from the buyer saying that it shows signs of wear and tear and they are having problems with the internet. I found the manual shortly after posting (I thought it was in the box) and have posted it off to them. They are now saying that if they cant get the internet to work they dont want it. I know the internet works, but its very low spec (I put the specs in the listing and it was clear that its a very basic machine, but it was very cheap) and I've a feeling that they bought it, expecting it to be faster/better quality. and will try to send it back.

I have a no returns policy and dont sell much, I have offered to refund some money as a good will gesture for "wear and tear" (which I am certain there was none, but it may have happened in transit) but cant afford to refund it all at the moment.

what can I do?

To be honest, I would refund the buyer and take it back. I couldn't be arsed with the whole ebay dispute / SNAD / forced refund / crappy feedback worry.

I would however then re-list it with an idiot-proof description of what those specs actually mean when it comes to using the netbook. You may even get a better price nearer Christmas.

I appreciate you say that you haven't got the money today, but you don't refund the buyer until you have it safely back anyway.

Its ok, I have refunded them a goodwill gesture and they seem fine about it now, I think I wasd just being a bit suspicious.

you mustn't refund until you get it back and then you need to check it is your machine too first

Well, as suspected they are saying it doesn't work. It absolutely DOES. They are saying its a faulty item, which it isn't.

Do I have to refund? I donyt care about feedback etc, I clearly stated, no refunds.

I thought you already had refunded?

well if they open a case you may be forced to refund, but they need to send it back first.

only £5 as a good will gesture. I am truly pissed off. its my word against theirs isnt it? they were expecting a proper notebook (for £35? really?) I knew this was going to happen.

I also got my dad, a computer engineer, to check it before I sent it.

well I would ask them to send it back for a refund - not much else you can do really.

If the buyer opens a dispute then yes you will have to refund.
Doesn't matter if you put no refunds in the listing. If the buyer opens a dispute, ebay usually agree with them.. By listing you have agreed to the t&c's of ebay.
Don't refund until you have received it back.
Dont see how it is unreasonable to expect to get a notebook for £35, have seen them for less than £60.

That's shit! So even if the buyer is lying about it being faulty, or has broken it themselves, they still get a refund?

yes but how do you know it didn't arrive damaged - it may have got broken in transit?

not every buyer is a scammer

The type of problem they are saying it has, is a software issue. It would be present in imported machines that were built for, say, american users. So it hasn't broken in transit. I know not every buyer is a scammer, I buy rather than sell, but this doesn't make sense at all.

well regardless there really is no point in rowing with the buyer. If you do they may willfully damage it and then send it back for a refund - and apart from small claims there will be nothing you can do

I know, it just doesn't seem fair, at all. I will be a tenner out of pocket (for p+p) and won't be able to resell it.

Why won't you be able to resell it?

wouldnt ebay stop me if its sent back because its faulty? which it isnt

anyway, I emailed them to put them straight about what the message means and told them how to fix it.

I havent heard anything since, so fingers crossed its done the trick.
