Divorce/separation

Reverting to maiden name

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone has experience of going back to their maiden name after a divorce? I’m hoping to get mine finalised soon and it’s something I can’t make my mind up about.

When I got married I kept my maiden name as an extra middle name so had to change my name by deed pole to add the marital surname.

I’ve got 2 young children so my main concern is how this would effect them, especially with travelling abroad? Would they be distressed by it etc?

Any advice would be much appreciated! X

I changed back but the kids were older. You don’t need to do a deed poll, just start using the name you want to use in future, but I did find it easier to have a deed poll and several certified copies.

I have a different surname to my children and I carry their birth certs (actually adoption certs in our case) with me when I travel abroad.

Thank you both! I know their dad will not take it well (very controlling and had this conversation with his first wife) and will say it’s damaging the kids so guess I’m a little worried about that too!

Same as purple. I did the deed poll for ease. My daughter double-barrelled her name to mine/her dads by deed-poll, so we still share a name. To do this you need father's permission before 16, or you can do it anyway once they are 16.

Same here, i kept my maiden name on most things except joint bank account and some government depts like hmrc and child benefit.

On decree absolute or before, im changing these ones left back to my maiden name. Ive got a deedpoll just incase but as ive been using my maiden name also, i dont think it matters too much.

Im changing the childrens also to make travelling easier. Birth cert wont help as my daughter's are originally what i want now but passports are both surnames and i want to drop one. So deedpolls needed for both dds and new passports. Complete waste of money as we have all had new passports in the last 2 years but i will do it all the same.

Is their dad happy with that?
