Divorce/separation

So what exactly did you tell your kids?

STBXH and I are on the verge of splitting, things are starting to get organised and we're planning on telling DS (8) in a few days. I just feel like I don't know where to start and we're going to get flustered and not know exactly what to say.

Break-up is amicable but driven by me – things have been deteriorating for years, DH thinks we should keep "trying" which means just carry on and hope things will get better and always refused counselling and hated really talking about it at all. So I'm the one who's got to the point of saying we need to separate. He disagreed but has accepted it and not tried to change my mind, and all the sorting of logistics has been reasonable and amicable.

So… what exactly do we tell DS? Just that we're not going to be living together any more? That we can't be together? I just feel like whatever platitude we say he's going to ask "why" and I don't know how best to answer in a reassuring way and without giving more detail than he needs about our actual relationship. And really I can't even begin to figure out what the first thing out of my mouth will be when we sit him down to tell him.
