Man Talk - Mileage

ok, so with all this travelling about and jetting back and forth over the pond the last 1.5 years, i've had to sell 3 cars and buy another 3.

The whole mileage thing is weird. I'm a nerd so I calculate my mileage when I get another car. Here's the results:

1.8 ltr Renault Scenic - 30 mpg
1.6 ltr Hyundai Lantra Estate - 32 mpg
3.4 ltr Pontiac Montana - 28 mpg!

It seems that it just doesn't matter what you buy, unless you've got a tiny bubble car or a huge pick up truck, it just doesn't matter what you buy in engine size for anything in between.

These are all tip top cars btw. I'm very picky and calculating when I buy a car and make sure I'll get a good price on re-sale.

Screw it. When I get back to the UK I'll just buy something that suits the family and worry about stupid engine size.

oh c'mon! celebrity crushes my arse. What's better than exciting mileage talk!?

I'll start a thread tomorrow discussing the pros and cons of 'Armour All' which may spin out into a discussion on pine scented air fresheners.

i'm trembling with anticipation... or that may just be the 3rd coffee i've had this morning.

Get a Toyota Prius. we get at least 40 mpg, and can be 55 plus on long journeys!

prius is smallish family car - we have 2 children and with roof box manage to go camping in it. It is dual fuel, petrol/electric. Battery is recharged form engine while braking/going downhill, so you never plug it in. We are hoping that the same technology is put into a slightly larger car soon!

yeah but the tax isn't a huge expense though really. What 90 quid vs 200 quid per year?

Erm, about £110 by my calculation and I wouldn't bung that on the bonfire if someone were offering it to me

If it is a company car a Prius is a good bet for the tax (DH is an accountant!)

FIL has a Skodia Octavia Estate diesel, travels at 70 dead on motorways and calls me as soon as he gets home after visiting us to tell me he's got into the 50s or 60s mpg. Like I care. You don't get that in any car at 80mp, so I don't try.

its gotta be a diesel next time.

after all this buying and selling temporary cars I've now been converted to looking really carefully and getting a really decent cheap cheap cars (like 1000 - 2000) keeping them really well and wacking a decent warranty on them.

I think I'll try to find a BMW 3 series diesel estate next time but they are difficult to get cheap. you have to be quick.

I'm going to miss my huge-ass Pontiac dearly. I'm literally going to cry when someone drives that away.

Hi DC.

I'm after an Audi A6. Warming to the diesel idea but either way, it's hardly a global warming solution.

that was weird. the net at work went down and i was getting all upset. I managed to get back on, started up the radio, and here you are.

It's like a great disturbance happened and you entered back into the world of MN. Kinda like Terminator when all the lightning and shit happens and Arnold appears in a parking lot or truck stop or whatever.

maybe not.
