So, what's a good value bike rack for car?

Not for really flash bikes, just bog standard ones. Will need to carry 3 bikes.

Totally confused why some are more than 300.00 and some are 20.00 quid dh wants that one which apparently do the same thing. What should I be looking out for, and any good brands? I am a bit sceptical of the cheap one, but as I know nothing about bike racks, I can't really comment knowledgably.

The Saris bones is very good quality and very easy to fit.

We have a Thule one. It was v expensive (about £200 10 years ago) but it's still going strong.

It's so easy to put the bikes on and off and we just keep it on the car all the time as you can still open the boot.

It's been worth every penny.

Cheap ones don't fit as well, jiggle on the car and you will never be really convinced they aren't going to fly off at high speed when you are barrelling down the motorway.

More expensive ones are more solidly built, feel sturdier and stiffer and don't flap about once fixed on.

In my experience, anyway.

Altera is slightly cheaper than Thule and still very well engineered and robust. The parents at ds' cycling club recommended the Altera Strada when we were looking for a tow bar cycle rack.

Maybe not as cheap as you are looking for.

Have a look at roofbox.co.uk - good service and good prices.
