I don't think we have a thread yet. The Giro starts on 7th May. Let's discuss.

I am super excited because Movistar may be letting Carlos Betancur start. AKA as Baby Bunny.

Brill! Shall we do a fantasy league at Velogames? I am usually crap so can guarantee I will get the lanterne rouge.

But we need a course plan, a start list, a brief Giro history, and an invite for potential peloton members...

Will sort those when the baby goes to bed! Time consuming this cycling fan girl lark.

As for BC. The week from hell it seems. 1st Shane Sutton- that's been rumbling on for a while he helpfully told a female trackie to "go and have a baby". Allgedly.

Then yesterday, Peter Kennaugh decided to tweet that there should be no funding for women's cycling from Sky/BC.

I was about to go to bed and Simon Yates has been popped for an asthma inhaler that didn't have the correct TUE. Hmm.

I love a good cycling scandal.

no worries - I can do those tasks. Sounds like I have a bit more time than you.

what on earth is PK saying?

Hah. Yes please. 15 month olds don't allow for much messing about copying startlists. She does like Elia Viviani though.

Pete tweeted this then deleted it after a load of backlash. What a week.

In it's 99th year, often considered to be a 3 week push bike race that is the lunatic fantasy of the most sadistic bike route planner in history., this year's Giro d'Italia starts on Friday 6th May with an individual time trial in the Netherlands, they fly the length of Italy to the deep south, and ride back up north following what looks like the Apennine hills through Chianti-land and Umbria possibly, into the Dolomites and wandering a bit into France in the Alps stages, and ends on Sunday 29th May in Turin.

In total we have three time trials, nine summit finishes and seven sprint stages. There is a Team Time Trial somewhere in the Dolomites, which is up hill, so they'll all be looking forward to that then....Bike

The teams haven't been confirmed as yet ( I think Monday?) but most of the big names and egos will be racing, though no Froomey or Cav but we have Nic Roche riding in support of Michel Landa on the Sky train. His Nibbles will be there but no Quintana, BUT Greipel yes, and Marcel 'The Hair' Kittel will in the salon.

The jerseys are :
Maglia Rosa, pink for the leader,
Red for points leader,
Blue for King of the mountains.
White for best young rider.

I don;t think there are other jerseys worn??

TV coverage, as far as I can see is the usual Eurosport live in the afternoons and then an hours highlights in the evening. I remember someone saying you can subscribe to Eurosport and watch on a device rather than tv. Was it DrTwo?

I love the Giro route planners. :D

I will set up the fantasy league when Velorooms updates.

There are no other jersies, however watch out for odd prizes for random mountain assents.

IMO ES Player isn't worth it. There are several streams on the internet and you can also download the stages via a torrent site- PM me if needed on this.

Brit interest includes Alex Dowsett for Movistar. Hoping he does well in the TT. (As an aside, what a carpet of chest hair that man has.)

Tell a lie, Movistar have replaced Dowsett with Betancur. Yummy.

We should have a 'mumsnet mascot' - a rider who is hot but not going to win anything and we'll cheer him on every day. Provisional start list is here, www.cyclingfever.com/editie.html?_ap=startlijst&editie_idd=MjY5NjE=

" a rider who is hot but not going to win anything"

Hmm..that could be challenging for me. Here is my hot rider who never actually wins anything.

But knock yourselves out!BikeSmile

Did I say I might be a little over zealous in my cycling fandom?

I think I might choose Moreno Moser www.ecodelledolomiti.net/Num_13/Images_13/Moser_Moreno_5.jpg

Have you looked at the Giro routes in veloviewer? They featured a few 3d ribbons last year. Very nice. Will link later if I remember....and start thinking of a mascot.

I've long suspected SS was an unreformed neanderthal (who pushed lots of people too far?) I always thought he was the one who drove VickyP to the edge.

Jenny Copnall on Radio5 late night last week: said that Dave Brailsford told her he intended to lie about her fitness to race in MTB world cup so that she could do early event but not a 2nd event (the elite women's race, this 2007? event). Copnall also said that the BC qualification to be a rider in any event was decided by a panel that did not explain its criteria, all done behind closed doors.

I know we should talk Giro, but sheesh!!
====================================
So who has a list of starting teams & riders in the Giro?

We were at the roadside the year (1999) that Pantani got pulled out of the Giro, just about grasping "las drogas" as explained by a tifosi.

Anyone dismayed by disaster of almost no live coverage on iTV of TdY yesterday?

SS - no matter what the 'he said/she said' fall out it's odd that he actually resigned over the sale of goods on ebay issue. It's a bit like Al Capone getting jailed for tax evasion. I'm a bit mixed on the 'push people too far' consideration. I am guessing that as a coach at elite level pushing people is a strong element of your job. And those people can walk away IF they think it's too tough. What's obv different is discriminatory attitudes and actions if that feeds into it.
fwiw I did meet SS on the road - riding in on an arterial road in Manchester, on his way to the Velodrome. He zoomed up beside me, slowed, said "G'day" in the Aussie accent, and disappeared up the road like a whippet on a bike.

lljkk the actual list of riders isn't issued until Monday but justinelibertine has linked to the provisional list last night.
Is it the case that Froome and Quintana are keeping their Tour powder dry? And if so what does that say about Nibali's priorities?

Just seen what Vos was paid for winning the Giro (~£500). Not so much a prize as an insult.

signing in, although not sure I'll be able to watch much Giro this year as we don't have Eurosport at the moment.
Just got back from watching the TdY go up a very steep hill.

Thanks jl ! I have no idea what it means but I'll be clicking the link tomorrow. Is it like footie manager?

For a bit I'll be away next week. I am coming down from my lofty seat in the Peaks to visit Londinium for three days on a training course, so I think I will be out of the Giro Monday to Thursday 1st week.

I pick up that Chaves will be OricagreenEdge's primary rider. He of the perma-grin which makes you want to know what drugs he is taking....Smile

Lol! I am looking forward to seeing all your choices. I am monumentally rubbish at the teams so you will all get more points than me!

Oh, and Fabian Cancellara is not very well so might be worth picking a different TTer.
