well after a horrendous drive to the venue coupled with queues at near by Wagamammas he was going to have to be bloody funny to make up for having a bag of chilli crisps and half a lager for your tea.
ANd thus he was.
We were also thwarted by the MOST unfunny support act ever witnessed who seemd to ram four rape " jokes" into a 20 minute set.. issues? him? hmm

Also Amstels " sitting around waiting while slagging off everyone else coming in" was irritating inter war jazz which while maybe comedic and quirky sounding in an office in london, in everywhere else made you want to punch ANYONE nearby.
the audience were of three types
1. strangely hairy and overweight- male and female.
2. indie woman (short cropped hair, terrifying eye make up, strange clothes that dont really go and an accessorizing boyfriend)
3. Town girls in glitter.

At least one of the above was to be disappointed in AMstels set as it was NO buzzcocks. It was really thought provoking and very clever. A lot of the gags were lost on the audience. I almost wanted to apologise at one point where I laughed( as it transpired was appopriate) where the rest of hte audience ahhed. Not a highlight.
The cat gag i loved.

BUT it was only an hour. No encore. NOthing. Evereyone shifted around strangely at the end and a big " was that it?" lurked.

it kept us thinking and talking all th way home, no bad thing surely?

we absolutely loved it, but agree about the support act rape jokes, and it was WAY too short...

he is very funny, intelligent, but there was something eversoslightly creepy about the '17 year old' posh boy scenario...

i love his mind though. and the way it works. and how self reflective he is. and how exposing he is of his own self loathing and insecurity.

there was an incident (resulting in the police being called) in the audience at the show we went to see, and as he pointed out, that is what we will remember!!!

ooh tell all.
yes support act - so bad - was it deliberate? after crisp gate we were grumpy to say the least.

MusterMix Wed 14-Oct-09 16:50:30

pointyhat Wed 14-Oct-09 20:54:15

You edgy about-town types.

I'll need to go and see comedy and make myself more interesting

MusterMix Wed 14-Oct-09 20:55:47

i had no tea.
it was the only highlight.
and we had Parking issues.
byt he time amstel came on we were giddy with helpless anger.

brimfull Wed 14-Oct-09 21:04:53

MusterMix Wed 14-Oct-09 21:15:08

no no we parked there too
it was like thebronx the naff casino. the Mugging car park
ew and the bar at the venue was like a 1980s student union trying to be fancy.

brimfull Wed 14-Oct-09 21:25:00

yes have never noticed the casino before last night

We loved it too. yes 17 yr old posh boy thing slightly odd. He said in Cambridge last night that the lad was in the audience but I wasn't sure if that was part of the joke or not.
I liked early finish (but then I am saddo who likes to be in bed by 10.30 so no surprise there)
Cambridge audience predictably quite different from bournemouth. Mostly stuuuuuuuuudents with odd hats (indoors???) and intellectual types (ditto women with Zoe Wanamaker fright wig hairdos). One odd woman on front row in sequinned cocktail dress. Amstell disappointed that his Pinter joke didn't work in Cambridge either.
My overriding emotion at the end of the night though was a desire to mother him and also to introduce him to a gay bloke I know who is dead thin and vulnerable (and has identical floppy curly hair to Simon)

MusterMix Thu 15-Oct-09 12:53:59

pinter joke?
did you think the mate at the park was bladrdy whatshisface - Russell brand? I did.

and yes to odd knittedy hats indoors nad polyster frilly skirts of large hippo arses

MusterMix Thu 15-Oct-09 12:54:20

no mention about posh boy possibly deigning to be in b nouth

deaconblue Thu 15-Oct-09 13:50:48

ooh perhaps he actually was there then. how horrible to hear that story about yourself. yes yes to large hipped hippies in skirts. I would be disappointed in Amstell if he fancied the prat that is Russell Brand. Was more fascinated to know who the actor type was who didn't bother emailing him.

MusterMix Thu 15-Oct-09 14:31:06

no no
t he mate who made him Act on impulese
oh do keep up

brimfull Thu 15-Oct-09 15:54:02

MusterMix Thu 15-Oct-09 15:54:27

my life is better for it.

TitsalinaBumsquash Thu 15-Oct-09 16:00:47

We went to Brighton Dome to see him on Monday, i thought i was really good, i quite liked the support act to but i have that sort of sense of humor im afraid.

A huge mix of people in the audience, one lady who shouted 'I love you Simon!!' got rather ed faced when he replied 'Im not sure how much you know about me.........?' lol grin

We were told 18yr old boy btw in the 'story' didn't find it that odd.

Love, love, love Simon Amstel, really missing him on Buzzcocks!

MusterMix Thu 15-Oct-09 16:01:30

you liked the arnab guy?
he was as funny as.. er

brimfull Thu 15-Oct-09 16:03:15

MusterMix Thu 15-Oct-09 16:03:18

MusterMix Thu 15-Oct-09 16:03:57
