An original, not a print. Obviously it depends on the artist and the age of the painting and loads of other variables, but I am canvassing more for a personal budget.

So, I suppose the question should read; how much would YOU pay for an oil painting?

What a bizarre question

I would pay £20 million if it were a Van Gogh for eg

however if it was something that Keith down teh allotment did one saturday afternoon then considerably less I should imagine

It would depend how much I liked it and how big it was but for my house and just for my enjoyment and not for investment I would say between ?700 and ?1,500

depends, I've been to the affordable art fair a couple of times and most of it is over £1500!

quickdrawmcgraw Wed 27-Aug-08 18:17:27

Sorry the ? meant euro.
about £500-£1200

KerryMum Wed 27-Aug-08 18:17:54

depends on how much disposable income I had and what kind of insurance I had to cover it.

KerryMum Wed 27-Aug-08 18:18:10

so these days about 1 euro

My Dad is a painter, well regarded in his area, has exhibitions at lots of regional galleries, but not a big name by any means.

He sells big oils at about £1200 - £2,500, and smaller ones from about £150 and upwards.

about £3000

It really depends on how much spare cash you have, and what your income is. What one person is happy to pay, another won't be.

DH and I bought a Robert Cook glicee for CAD1800 (tarted up by his hand) a few years ago, whereas his originals sell for about 20k. We probably wouldn't spend more than about £500 on any painting these days.

Thanks for your replies, interesting range really. The reason it cropped up was because a friend has just baught a lovely oil painting for about 300 pounds, I think its pretty nice, and I was browsing the artists web site. It occured to me that I have no idea what the range is for art, no experience and no guide. What you have all said fits pretty much with what I was thinking, and that 300 pounds is actually quite reasonable. If only I had time for a quiet child free wander round an art gallery [cant wait for term to start emoticon].
