OMG have you checked your actual internet usage? I've just reduced my monthly broadband bill by £20!!

I'm shocked. We are with BT and have been paying £37 a month for the top package with unlimited usage (plus line rental). If you ring your provider they tell you what your actual usage is. Ours is actually less than 2gb a month (= fair bit of MNing and internet shopping/browsing then emails no freqent downloading of movies or music) Ours means that BT will reduce the price down to £7.95 (for which they'll give us 10gb five times what we are using, so plenty )or if we switched to Sky it would be completely free!

I'm shocked that I've been paying so much money for nothing!

littleredsquirrel, did you just call BT customer services?

am with BT and have been paying A LOT for ages now, and just haven't got round to sorting out other broadband to get it cheaper.
your OP has got me thinking! (that, and the recent budget and pay freeze for us nurses which will mean much belt tightening)

I'm with orange and get mone free with a £15 a month mobile contract.

We only have the basic package and have never gone over despite it being used for at least 3 hours a day between us.

Sorry everyone, been offline today. All you do is call BT/other provider and they tell you your usage. I had no idea what we actually needed and what we actually used because who knows what a gB is anyway.

I had assumed that since we use the internet every day and I do a fair bit of MNing an internet browsing everday, we needed an unlimited pacakage but actually we hardly use anything. The woman at BT told me that unless you download movies everyday its highly unlikely that you need unlimited.

I'm tempted to switch to sky and get it completely free but can't really be doing with the hassle of moving providers.

Do you have to be out of your contract or will they change mid way through. I only joined in January so still have 6 months left.

littleredsquirrel · 24/06/2010 21:50

No they'll let you change. We moved here in november so are still in contract. When I took it out I queried whether we needed unlimited and I was told to give it a couple of months so that they could see my usage and then to call back and check the usage and then change the package if need be. They do then make you sign up to a new 12 months though.

i am please/pissed with bt aswell. like op we were with bt for phone and broadband. then sky offered us good deal. we already have sky+. so we went to cancel with bt. then at the last minute before cancellation, then came back with a quote of £15 all in, instead of £40.
But the thing was that over the last few years we have regularly asked them if we are on the best deal. but when you begin cancelling proceedings they offer you better. but we had repeatedly asked. why didn't they give us this before ?

I don't have a landline and we have broadband on cable at £20 per month and use skyp - that way I don't have to pay the £17 standard charge for the landline and it is only £3 more for unlimited and wireless, excellent signal aswell for the laptop.

I don't have a tv either - so don't pay the £12 per month - we watch a few bits on demand after its been shown and get a whole selection of stuff on that and youtube

Not sure it would work for us but it is true that most households get nowhere near the ceiling if there is only one computer in the house and you are not downloadng films etc.

We had the 10gb usage and I kept going waaay over it. Ended up paying £50+ extra. Bastards never let us know we were going over though.

The people who ask me in the street who we're with for broadband and calls etc. always shut up when we say we're with sky so they must be giving us the best deal. We got our line rental reduced to £5 a month (for a year) when we rang the customer service and asked if there was any way we could save a bit of money. We do pay £15 a month for unlimited BB which we do use.

Anyone got a non 0845/0844 number for sky?

I think I want to switch from bt broadband to sky, as I never use my phone line, I just use my included mobile minutes. I'm paying £19.99 a month with bt ATM and I've heard sky is much cheaper.

jenroy29 - We're the same with people who knock on our door. As soon as we mention sky they thank us for our time and move on.
