Not the exact answer to your question, (I would hazard a guess at ‘months’ but it depends on where you are along the process of the debt)

It could also depend on whether it has been passed to a debt control department/contractor or the debt sold on from the original creditor to a debt collection agency.
They will all try to get some form of payments underway - their ideal is to have the debt paid, but if you could do that then you probably would have, so next they want a payment agreement with regular payments. This agreement must be practical and affordable - don’t offer the most you could pay to get them off your back, offer what you could consistently pay

The most important thing to do is explain your difficulties, and get a stop on extra interest and fees that just compound the problem
If you’re communicating then they know you aren’t ignoring the debt

Do you mean a debit card attached to a bank account? Or a store card?

Do you mean how long before the company takes it to Court and you get a CCJ or is this already a CCJ and you are asking how long it takes fir the company to issue enforcement action?

Speak to them or one of the above companies for help ASAP. Don’t let this get out of hand. A payment plan can solve your problems. Don’t let them pass to debt collectors as that will add hundreds to the bill. Speak to them ASAP please.

Speak to Stepchange. They will negotiate with DCAs on your behalf so you are not paying more than you can afford. Particularly useful if you have multiple debts. They can put you in a plan where they take your excess income and share it out pro rata among your creditors. It will take longer but the DCAs will no longer pester you.

Bear in mind that the debt collection industry is deeply corrupt. These DCAs buy up debts for pence in the pound and then try to add their own charges. They just buy and sell debts between themselves like they were commodities. You need someone in your corner.

Do not be afraid of DCAs. They have no legal power other than being able to take you to court. Do not let them frighten or harass you.

I think it's safe to presume OP meant a credit card and neither of your 2 options since a credit card is what they asked about.

I have never been taken to court OP. I didn't pay the debt collection agency either. In the end they gave up sending letters!

I don't want to be doing any debt relief if I don't have to if I can pay out of it rather than it staying on my record then I will

I would be very careful if you intend to have any kind of credit in the future, ie a mortgage, car etc. Anything like CCJ's will show on a credit check and stay on there for 6 years. Have you seen If you can negotiate with your lender a set amount each month, have the card suspended so you can't use it, and a lower interest rate?
