False economy..?

Interested to know what cheap stuff you think is just, well... cheap, as opposed to good value. For instance, while I quite like some own-brand batteries, I skip the really, really cheap ones, which last about 3 minutes before they have to be replaced Hmm. And with bargain basement bog rolls, it seems to take half a roll just for a pee... Surely that's not good value?

Yes, I think cheap toilet roll is a false economy, as is cheap washing up liquid - it's always so runny that you go through the whole bottle in no time.

Cheap tinned tomatoes - especially when they consist of approx two chopped tomatoes sitting in a tin full of vaguely orange water. I ended up either straining two tins together to make one passably watery one, or squeezing an entire tube of tomato puree in to make up some body.

Diet coke is subject to loads of misleading "offers."
A six pack in my town ranges from "BOGOF - £3,99 for two" to "2.50 each, special offer" to "half price - 1.25"
And yes I "love" my inverted commas today! Grin

Toilet roll - yes
Washing up liquid
Very cheap washing powder - better to but aerial on offer. End up washing twice
I don't buy my petrol in the cheapest place anymore
Knickers and bras
Toothpaste - we only have one set for life Grin
Tea bags - life's too short
Meat- smaller amount of good quality anyday

I'm all for buying a bargain or value food but always buy:

Heinz baked beans
Heinz ketchup
Persil washing powder
decent toilet rolls
Fairy washing up liquid
Gold blend coffee (dh's choice, I don't touch coffee)
Decent bread
Decent makes of shoes for the dc's

My mechanic always warns against using cheap supermarket fuel too!

Definitely no to cheap shit tickets.
Cheap cereal mings too.
Cheap fabric softener. You might as well just not bother, it smells of nothing and softens nothing.
Washing up liquid - you just use twice as much.
Dishwasher tablets I think are all the same, I never buy fancy ones unless they're on offer, own brand do exactly the same job. Although not the very basic powder as you have to buy the rinse aid and salt so it's no saving at all.

dog food
coffee
shower gel
cheap tissues - too rough
ice-cream- flavourless
primark anything- drops to bits within days/weeks -definitely false economy

Like a previous poster We buy Nicky toilet roll in bulk 1.99 for 9 rolls. Really Good quality.

Aldi premium washing up liquid as good as fairy!

Basically most of our stuff is Aldi !

Heinz ketchup is not as good as Hellmans, or Tesco own brand.

Hellmans mayo is not as good as Aldi own brand.

Hovis is not as good as Aldi bread.

Tesco croissants are not as good as Aldi.

Fairy WUL is not as good as Aldi.

You can't assume that big name or big price means good.

Tesco value peas are horrible - they're all hard and little and like pebbles.

I bought a giant tub of Greek yogurt on an explanatory trip to Aldi the other day and it was horrible. It was cheap but I ended up throwing it so spent more money replacing it.

Ddog wont eat anything other than waitrose own brand dog food in the pouches.

On the other hand the kids adore value cheese and tomato pizzas from Tesco and DH prefers Tesco own brand 'monster munch' and 'French fries'

Nicky toilet roll came out top in superscrimpers tests- value, quality and if your waste gets sucked up.
We have to have Heinz products, little does dh know its aldi ketchup decanted.but brown sauce is always branded, I don't like the cheaper ones & he doesn't eat it.

I've now got Nicky bog rolls on my shopping list. Thanks for the tip.

Heinz ketchup doesn't hold a candle to sainsbury's own.

We fork out for decent quality dried dog food, but you show me a dog that turns it's nose up at the cheap stuff two days in a row, and I'll show you a dog that's escaping from the garden to eat next door's cats' food.

Yes to the petrol. Two mechanics have told me this.

Basics tea bags: I tried I really did. But they produce muddy water and you're a long time dead. (However, stick a few tea bags in smelly trainers and they absorb the whiff and any damp.)

Using a tumble dryer in Winter: drying our clothes on radiators caused loads of black mold creeping up the walls of our poorly ventilated old house. The damage it was doing was going to cost more to fix than the cost and use of a tumble.

Yes to the dog food. And, pet insurance. Our hound need emergency treatment (operation, a scan, loads of drugs). Better to pay a few quid a month than try to find £1000 in an emergency.

Basics butter: DP absolutely wont consider having cheap butter; he says it doesn't taste of anything.

Cheap bin bags. The saving of 10p a bag is not worth the misery of cleaning up the kitchen after it bursts.

Cheap instant coffee... just foul.

How many sheets do you get on each roll of Nicky toilet roll?

Report
annielostit · 10/04/2014 09:51

Not sure if that's said 'sheets' then. Not sure I m on a different brand this month because of an offer @ pound stretchers. Tbh I think ds eats the paper the amount he goes through.

ilovepowerhoop · 10/04/2014 11:00

my Nicky toilet roll doesnt tell you how many sheets but says average roll length is 20m

Cheap shampoo doesnt seem to last anywhere near as long as more expensive, thicker, goes further, shampoo.

Nicky kitchen roll is also brilliant! I can't understand why it isn't the no 1 seller!
