Writing fiction about real people/places

Hi all - does anyone have any advice?
I have a few ideas for a story I'd love to write if I can get past the fear/ inertia! I'd like to set it in a certain (local) place and am interested in local history so would be mentioning some historical events etc. What I'm unsure about (I'm a paranoid worrier!)is whether I can identify famous buildings and people in my fictional story without asking the permission of living relatives. It won't be anything outlandish, and I probably wouldn't use names but I'd love to use the setting of a beautiful local building, and talk about the family history of the place but I'm not sure if I'm 'allowed'.
Does anyone know - or am I just inventing another reason never to write the story in my head?
Thanks!

Why don't you just write it then when you send it to publishers they will advise one ditorial changes that have to be made?
