Tell me I'll be wasting my time and the market is oversaturated

This week I took it into my head to have a go at transferring an idea out of said head and on to paper, simply because it's been on my mind for a few years now.

However, I've gotta be honest, plotting and writing the damn thing is really cutting into my reading time, and at the end of my Herculean efforts, it's unlikely to be publishable. If I can convince myself that even a well-written novel has no chance of selling, owing to all the other books and well-established writers in the genre, then I will be able to convince myself to stop investing my time and emotional energy in it when I could be reading other people's fiction. I'm sure you can see the benefits to me there.

The genre(s) it would fall into would be lesbian and gay paranormal romance/urban fantasy with possibly a bit of conspiracy thriller? (I'm not exactly very well up on classification terminology in art and literature- I just know what I like.)

Passing over the meaty issue of whether cultural Philistines such as myself can write, is there any chance such a book wouldn't be lost in the sales rankings?

You can't control the market, the publishers, the industry, the sales figures, the blah, blah. You know this!

What you can do, is write your story the best you can, and get it out there.

Write the thing, then tweak it to fit a genre better - or don't - Publishers Say they are crying out for excellent gay/lesbian stories. So do it!

There's no reason it shouldn't be you who everyone is reading in a couple of years time...

That's both very encouraging and helpful, and yet simultaneously not what I wanted to hear! Grin

Okay, end of MN'ing time and back to the struggle you haven't helped me opt out of.
