So, what sort of stuff is everyone writing at the minute?

I've just started writing a ghost story, my first ever attempt at writing a book!

What about everyone else?

And while I'm here, what does "YA" mean??

YA means young adult Grin.

I'm writing a crime novel and also a dystopian YA television series ( and concurrent novel(s)).

I thought it might mean 'young adult' but wasn't sure, thank you!

Wouldn't even know where to begin with dystopian type stuff, it must need a lot of attention to detail.

Oh a ghost story sounds exciting Smile I agree about distopian ya , world building must be so difficult ,interesting though.I'm writing ya fiction at the minute and my first attempt I've been properly excited about . Really hope I can keep up some kind of momentum. Good luck to both of you .

Picture books. Age 3-5/whenever.
Polishing one I've just got down in first draft, and trying to think of ideas for another one.

A fantasy novel, just for my own amusement really, not sure I'll ever show it to anyone.

I'm enjoying doing the world building but don't have much in the way of plot.

Literary fiction. I have a novel complete in draft bar an ending, as I've had to abort work on it to complete a work writing project with an urgent deadline, which is frustrating.

GetA, is it interesting to be simultaneously working on a screenplay and novel for what they say about storytelling in different media, or are they just very different beasts?

Silly rhymes for the blog. I've got some romance stories and two porn novellas on the go.

Literary fiction, I suppose. Am close to being finished but have one plot thread I can't resolve and it's really preventing me getting on and finishing it. Very frustrating. Especially as I have an idea for another book and am really keen to get started on it.

I'm writing contemporary women's fiction. The sort of stuff I like to read.

Three ghost writing proposals, one first draft of a commissioned ghost written book, and vague chapters here and there of crime fiction I might do under my own name one day . . . but probably not!

My next children's books attempts will be:

Why Chickens Are Evil And Must Be Stopped. - Kind of self explanatory. Chickens hate people and plan to overthrow us. I'll reveal their plans. (If they don't get to me first)

Pink Stinks. - A girl visits a new nursery and wonders why everything is pink. Possibly a series might come out of it if I can create a good enough 'world'. I think I can do a fun angle on nursery life.

Poonelope. - The adventures of a poo who just wants to make friends. Half done poem done for my own pleasure and probably won't amount to anything.

Ranting on Mumsnet mostly. :)

I'm trying to decide between two ideas - it will be YA whatever it is.

I like your chicken idea TiggyOBE. Not sure I'd pay good money for Poonelope, but kids did like 'Poo goes to pooland' very much. Do you know that literary classic?

I'm currently subbing my memoir to agents, and have just started working on my first novel, which is still in the planning stages, so not many words down yet and am still working on the plot. It's meant to be a comedy, but we'll see - it might all go tits up!

I've just started a fantasy novel - about 12,000 words in, but a lot of it needs expanding. I'm world building too, but have to admit I'm resorting to generators for lots of things - I have the basic plot started (Act One) and a vague idea of the ending, but it's the middle I think I'm going to struggle with.

Strawberry, are you using some kind of mapping software to build your world? Once upon a time I used to use Autorealm or Campaign Cartographer but now I have a macbook I've just downloaded Ortelius to play with, but am finding it a bit fiddly at the moment.

Non - fiction. A day book about ordinary things. I'm really enjoying it as it means some research too. No idea how to even approach publishing.

Young Adult fiction with romantic interest. Finished a novel about teenage relationships going wrong (with themes of abuse, drugs, pregnancy, medical issues...) and currently working on the plot for a book about a girl with super-strict parents who has no choice but to rebel.
I also write academic articles for a magazine aimed at sixth-form students and I actually get paid for that. Not so successful with the fiction yet.Sad

My own take on the hidden world/monster hunting kind of story.

I hadn't written anything for years so have been really enjoying building up a new world and creating characters that I'm actually beginning to be rather fond of.

So much so that it's turned from 'hmm shall I have a go at writing a book?' to having wall charts plotting out various plot lines over the course of three books, reams of notes and doodles spilling from every drawer and an increasingly bemused dp who wants to know what I'm laughing at now.

FYI I was laughing at the idea of a miniature 'wild hunt' being chastised and fined for harassing an old long suffering Labrador with a twig.

I may have gone a little crazy, I definitely most likely won't be making any money out of it, but I've been having more fun than I have in years! (Disabled, trapped at home and until recently suffering with depression)

I've been a non-fiction writer, full time, for over 20 years. Fiction was always my ultimate ambition but I was always too scared to start, in case it was crap and I realised I had no Ultimate Ambition... I'm doing Nanowrimo this year, and loving it. I'm 10k words into a really bad YA novel about a fat teenage girl with an evil, evil mother.

I'm not trying to make it good (yet), I'm just having fun writing fast, and at length. I hope it's teaching me something other than really bad habits.

The goal is a 50k novel finished by Dec 1st. I doubt I'll ever show it to anyone, but it will have broken my wall of fear -- hopefully.

Fiction is MUCH harder than non-fiction. I've learned that much already. Hats off to all of you who've completed fictional projects!

Book number twelve. It's supposed to be quite fluffy but it's turning out a lot harder hitting than I was intending (but that seems to happen to all my books, hey ho.)
