Non-Ficton...how to proceed?

Hullo

I have a book plan. Wait no...I have a book idea. Not a novel. A kinda travel/romance notion. Think 'eat pray love' and try not to cringe. I have the words and the idea. No budget to fulfill it (at the moment). Got chapters written (and other chunks down), but the very nature of the beast is I need to do the travel bit to have the adventures to get that bit done.

Advice on fiction and childrens books seems abundant, but guidance for my type of lit seems sparse.

Researching other books of this type, the authors got advances (in some cases small amounts to cover expenses it seems...not Gilbert territory yet!), but I don't know what steps to take to get to this rolling. Write spritely notes directly to agents of this genre? Sit in lobbies of publishing houses in a smart bookish blouse and hope someone will snap me up as a sassy addition to their brand? Any ideas?!

From the flecks of info I can pan online, it seems a few of these authors have proven form in magazines or the like. Others seem to have come from the ether with no previous trace of their writing CV. However, I guess blogging is a way to build 'form', if this is a good start.

Thought/experiences welcome. Thank you.

Sorry no advice but watching this post as I have a book idea - sorta novel thing, but too much in note form to be useful yet. Thought I might see what you are advised! :)

Thanks Author - I have saved the info and will look tomorrow. Just been printing off some stuff I've written to look though.
Also gave a sample of two 'chunks' (sections/several paragraphs) of stuff I've put together for two different stories, to have read over by a friend who has just been published.
