We finally have a deposit saved up without having to sell a few organs to pay rent, so we want to start the process of getting a mortgage over the next few months.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a broker who will check the market for us, or would you recommend contacting lenders ourselves? Apart from them accessing a number of lenders at once for us, is there any other advantages that you found from using a broker - maybe smaller things you weren't aware of before hand? We are FTB and a bit clueless really!

Thanks in advance!

Go directly to ulster bank and kbc - quite simple processes. 6 months payslips, bank accounts, saving accounts.

Thanks for the bump bean - I didn't get a notification about it.

Bluefargo - thanks for this, I'll have a look at both

Ask about money is brilliant, really helpful posters. I'd be inclined towards a broker myself, unless you want to do all the trawling through stuff. AAM has fixed posts, updated frequently, on all sorts of things like best savings accounts, so mortgages might be in there.

Fair play for keeping all your organs and saving a deposit!

Watch out for deals like no bank fees if you've your mortgage with someone, there might be little extra things like that you can get without it costing you more.

Thanks Apileofballyhoo - the deposit has been a long slog, so much so we are probably getting too old for anything longer than a 20 year term. Even so, a mortgage will be less than our rent, we reckon about €500 per month (at current figures). That alone will give us €6k a year for decorating etc, on a one-room-at-a-time basis.

That's great. Also you won't be stretched too much if interest rates go up.
