Living in Ireland - are you prepping for Brexit?

I kind of am. Apart from Irish produced single/raw ingredients I'd imagine the rest of my shopping is imported (even with Irish made products I'd say the ingredients are often imported).

I know we'll have shipments coming in from Europe but a huge proportion normally comes via the UK at Dover, by road acroos England and Wales and into Ireland that way, which is a lot faster than by boat from France. And if the UK is chaotic then there'll be long delays. Not to mind all the stuff that we import specifically from the UK.

So I'm thinking I need:
Rice
Pasta
Frozen veg
Tins of tomatoes/passata
Coconut milk
Curry paste/spices
Vegetarian protein options
Flour
Baking powder and breadsoda
Sugar
Tea
Coffee
Cooking oil
Treat things inc chocolate and ice-cream
Household cleaning stuff
People cleaning stuff

I thought we'd be fine for butter, milk, cheese, eggs and meat but would we be, for example, short on butter if shops were low on spreads and oil? And short on spuds if shops were low on rice and pasta?

There are a few own brand gluten free Tesco things I buy a lot, so they're something to stock up on. I'll do the same for M&S if I get around to it.

I think with the talk of a hard border s didtinct possibility now after the EU pronouncement yesterday we'd all be wise to stock up a bit.

I was reading last week that 95% of the ingredients of a sliced pan are imported, we don't mill flour here anymore. Remember the panic buying of sliced pans during the last snow? It took over a week for our local Tesco to have fully restocked shelves after a few days snow.

We do mill flour here - Odlum's mill in Laois is still going strong, and there are a few "artisanal" mills around the place that do stoneground flour. But most of the flour used in commercial bakeries is from outside Ireland. I don't think we can grow enough wheat here to meet demand. Wheat, especially wheat for strong bread flour etc., doesn't like wet acidic soil... so that's most of the country fecked, then.

OP, I'm getting in a few basics, yeah.

  • Store cupboard things that we'll use anyway, like pasta, rice, passata, beans, frozen veg.
  • Some spare boxes of laundry detergent (special kind as we're allergic in our house to most mainstream brands).
  • Drugs! Paracetamol and ibuprofen (both tablets for the adults and bottles of the kids' stuff), plus spare asthma inhalers.

After reading the below article on the impact to supply chains, I've decided to get a few basics in as I think there may be a few weeks or two of disruption.

I was planning on getting a second freezer as our fridge / freezer one is tiny, so will stash a few bags of frozen veg and fruit. So will eek the budget to get it sooner rather than later.

I do mini prepping all the time, used to be pure laziness so I could get away without dragging buggy to the shops when I didn't drive(hills and took the guts of an hour to get there). Beast from the east hit and we had no panic despite not heading near a shop for 2ish weeks because we didn't have to. Have ramped it up a bit because of Brexit but I'm hoping it's not really necessary.

More dried goods, tins, toiletries, medicines, usual. bellinsurge is amazing on these and the general prepper section.

Was hoping to get a chest freezer for the shed in Nov but didn't happen. I'm more concerned about BIL in London who appears to be doing nothing ConfusedConfusedConfused

Was talking to the pharmacist today when collecting supplies for my sons's type 1 diabetes and he said that the stockpiling of pharmaceuticals in the UK is already impacting on their supply of certain drugs.

I'm in two minds in that I can hold extra supplies of his medication but if everyone did this then this would make things worse for other diabetics.

It is not just insulin but a whole plethora of other supplies that he needs on a daily basis to keep his pump running.

I think I will stock up on some basics. That's a good list Apileofballyhoo.

Around 2 weeks ago I heard it reported on the radio that Ireland produces 8 times the amount of food we need - most is exported where as the UK only produces 60% of the food it needs.

I might buy an extra jar of Marmite just in case.

I don't think the analogy with the snow carries - the roads within the country were closed and there wasn't panic buying, just no re-stocking.

Having said that, I think I will be upping supplies of some things. But it is very hard to work out what comes here direct from Europe and what from the UK (yes I'm considering it outside of Europe already ;-)).

We're unlikely to starve, but what we produce and what we want to eat may not match up very well. Lots of veg, dairy and meat. Much less in the way of processed foods. At a guess.

I did some stocking up and then had to use some of it up due to unexpected large bills. I still have not got a clue where half our stuff comes from. Can't believe it's as uncertain as ever this close to the 29th.

No. I am sick to the back teeth of bloody brexit and whenever I hear anything about it I feel like putting my fingers in my ears and going la la la la la. Tbf my dh does the shopping and he tends to buy the same stuff every week whether we need it or not so we are always well stocked.
