No, I've never heard of parents going to their child's debs. The norm is a gathering in the child's home, usually family, neighbours etc to pop in to see the debutante and admire the fashion, take photos then wave off the couple on their way to the venue.

My children have been to a number of debs - their own and as escorts and I've just asked one of them if they know of any debs where the parents were present and he's never heard of such a thing. There's usually a few teachers at it though.

Yes, thats what i thought. It was one particalar school, a fairly well known boys school

I was just wondering if it was a new thing. And the TY ball had become the thing parents wave you off too.

Just an unusal debs then

Not a new thing - there have always been a few schools around the country that do it. Parents are invited for a meal and some ceremonial bit, then they go home and leave the debs to party til the wee hours.

If this is a Dublin boys' school, then as far as I know parents have always attended the meal part of the Debs.

I went to a school where the parents still go to the debs. Mine - thankfully - looked horrified when the letter came out inviting them grin

I also went to a school where the parents went to the Debs. As Daisy and MarDhea describe, just for the dinner.

The boys were of course all in rented tuxes - and all took their jackets off. Which resulted in my Dad mistaking my best friend's boyfriend for a waiter. 23 years on, still remembered with amusement.

Didn't happen in my brother and sister's school though.

Mum and Dad quite liked it! They got on well with the other parents and it was a nice way to draw a line under our time at the school. Don't know if it still happens.

At this year's debs in that boys' school, the parents were there til the wee small hours too!

Some private schools' debs parents go.
I know one school where pupils vote on it, so some years parents go to the dinner and other years they aren't invited.
Years ago I was at sil debs- families could book a table at it.

What's a debs?

MotherForkinShirtBalls Sun 20-Jan-19 11:58:32

Debutant ball, like a prom or graduation.

Ah, thanks!

At my school parents, students and teachers all attended the debs. Then the students went off to a club leaving the parents and teachers behind. This was in the 90's though - the olden days grin
