Nothing changes. This is absolutely disgusting.

That is absolutely sickening. I hope she was able to access abortion services after that. The poor girl.

It's really relentless just how often women and girls are screwed over back home.

2017? Doesn't feel like it.
"Young girl". I wonder how old? Poor kid.

Suggests under 18 I think.

It makes no sense either does it? She's suicidal so gets sectioned but not suicidal enough to be allowed an abortion.

Plus on top of it there's young people in desperate need of psychiatric care not getting it; yet a young girl gets sectioned being suicidal for being denied something that the actual denial of was causing her suicidal thoughts

My God I hope there is more to this because otherwise it sounds like the female Catch-22. Sane enough to be able to request an abortion? Not insane enough to have one.

Imagine thinking you were going to get the medical treatment you thought you'd asked for, only to find yourself being assessed for a section.

It reads like both the child and her mother thought she was getting an abortion then she finds herself effectively sectioned.
Reminiscent of a twisted version of the handmaid's tale?

That consultant should be struck off. It will be his or her own mysogynistic religious views, I'll bet, that led to that ridiculous decision to section her rather than allow her an abortion.

Yes Wolfiefan I thought so too.

In fact I mentioned it on The Handmaid's Tale thread - where's it's been totally ignored: which has irrationally irritated me no end, then made me think it makes it even more so like The Handmaid's Tale where if the totally overriding of women's rights doesn't effect someone they just ignore it or passively accept it.

It is downright terrifying that this happened! I am beyond horrifed and seriously hope she had a termination.

I'm not sure the consultant should be struck off. It sounds perfectly plausible that she's not mentally ill. It's also possible that in this case, abortion won't fix what she's been sent to her/him about. It shows up the law on abortion as an ass.

However, for me living in England it does throw a light onto the law here. There is something similar about it - you have to have two doctors say your health is at risk, you can't just request an abortion and get one.

I doubt the psychiatrist will be struck off. It seems reports are careful not to suggest if they are male or female thought. I'm wondering if that's due to past history of comments on articles.
