Cots and beds

Which crib/moses basket/newborn bed would you recommend to a new parent?

We're making plans to test and review newborn beds and we'd love to know which ones you'd recommend.

The first 6 months of a baby's life can be a challenging time for everyone involved, I'm pretty sure we can all agree getting some sleep really helps!

If you've used a newborn bed/moses basket/crib that you'd recommend, we'd love to hear about it. Your comments will help us to create a shortlist of beds to test and recommend to new parents.

Also, if you have any tips on what to look out for when choosing a bed for a newborn, please share them on this thread. We'll include these comments in our buyer's guide

Thanks!

I've had one called Waldin off amazon this time, its a 3 sided one. I think these are great because you can safely Co sleep with the baby.

I think this one is really good as the price is right and it has a weight limit of 50kg which means we can use it as long as the baby physically fits, rather than being constrained to 9kg or so. However the mattress that comes with it is awful and I'm not keen on how it attaches to the bed.

We had a mamma and papas Moses basket and the next to me crib. Loved both of them.

Stokke Sleepi was great for us. In its smallest setting it was slightly bigger than a Moses basket. It's on wheels and was easy to move it around without any lifting. I'd had a c section.

We had a very small bedroom but wanted baby in with us. Because it was on wheels we could easily move the cot in to the room and wedge it next to my side, then roll it out in the morning.

We had a stokke crib which could be extended and a moba Moses basket which were both great

Bought a Moses basket second hand from eBay for dd1. Thinking was mothercare but can't be sure. Dd2 had one from a charity shop which my mum replaces the covers on with pink star fabric it was beautiful.

Both seemed to do the job! I do recommend a stand though if you are placing by your bed. I believe the stand was claire de lune.

Chicco next 2 me. My 5.5 month old still fits in it. Was great in the early days when baby would only fall asleep with me still having a hand on him, as I'm not comfortable with cosleeping. Has also been great for nightfeeds so I don't even have to get out of bed. Not looking forward to the transition out of it and actually having to get up in the night!

Haven't used it yet but i've gone for the Hyde crib from mothercare. Wanted something a bit bigger than a moses basket and not as expensive as a next to me so it fit the bill.

Snuzpod work well for us, would have lasted longer if we hadn't used the sleepyhead and had to move up to the bigger one st 6 months (I know they aren't recommended anymore). After that we just attached the big cot to the bed with the side off.

We've got a tutti bambini cozee and love it. We actually don't use it as a co sleeper but the mesh panel means DS and I can see each other easily and I like the fact that you can tilt it for reflux or a cold. He's settled in it from day 1 and is really portable too!

With the Chicco next to me what did people do about duvets - suddenly having a panic!!! It will be January so don't want to be cold but it fills me with dread that the duvet could go near the baby!

The Snuzpod was by far the best thing we bought

DS stayed in it until he was nearly 6 months old, and only then moved because he could pull himself up, not because he had outgrown it

It can rock, it can be tilted for reflux babies, and it looks like a nice piece of furniture

I have a snuzpod and have borrowed a friends next2me for travel. They both seem to have pluses and minuses but I wouldn't be without one. My babies are big and would've been out of a Moses basket at 2m; our bedroom is too small to fit a proper cot.

@kittymctitty we use grobags - can’t be kicked off and they do a 3.5 tog for cold rooms.

Ah just realised you mean your duvet! I have a next2me and my duvet is nowhere near it. I tuck it round myself so there are no loose bits but it’s really not an issue.

Another recommendation for the Waldin co-sleeper on Amazon, we're still using it at 12 months and imagine it will still be ok for at least 6 months more. Really sturdy and a good amount of space - it's like a bed extension! The only thing is change about it is the corners on the pieces which hold up the co-sleeping "bridge" - not sure who thought that was a good idea!

Next2me was the best thing I’ve bought this time around. Likewise my 5 mo is still happily snoozing in it.

I vote for the Bednest.

We had a Moses basket and a traditional rocking crib and a cot, and the Bednest was by far the most practical (being able to reach inside and cuddle without risking co-sleeping). It also looked nice, was good value and it was handy to be able to use it around the house as a more sturdy option than a Moses basket.

My second favourite was the purflo nest: Ideal for having baby in when he was poorly and wanted him on the bed with me, but made co-sleeping less scary. Also very good for using about the house or at other people’s houses, or when we went on holiday (as travel cots provided in hotels often seem a bit rubbish!)

Stokke mini/sleepi.

Compact and easy to put together/adjust as baby grows.

We had a snuz pod but swapped it for the Chico next 2 me which is bigger than the former.
I loved the chicco so much. So easy to get baby in and out and I felt he was really safe in there. Loved how you could lower/raise the ends independently. The snuz pod was definitely more stylish but didn't have half the features of the chicco and was much smaller.

Ds outgrew the chicco at about 5 months though as he was pulling himself up on the side which obviously wasn't safe.

I didn't have a CS but I can image the chicco would make the lifting in and out scenario easier on your stomach/core too.

@KittyMcTitty I did as a PP said and always tucked the baby side end of the divert under my legs so that it wouldn't get near him. I also just had less duvet volume on the side iyswim.

I always slept facing baby too so that I knew I'd have the duvet under me. Tbh though it's far enough away that it's not a problem
