Finnish Baby sleep boxes

I am currently pregnant and am looking for a safe way for my newborn to sleep and have heard that the baby boxes that are very popular in Finland for reducing cot death have now become available on ebay and amazon. Has anyone tried one yet?

I am really paranoid about cot death as had a friend whose baby succumbed to this awful death and hear that these baby boxes have been proven to reduce the risk.

It would be really useful to know if anyone has heard of them and what they think about them as I need to think about buying a cot soon.

yes it is a cardboard box but they can be reused after the baby has grown out of them so a great idea to use for keepsakes etc. Would it out you off because it is cardboard? I think the idea is that it is eco friendly and they come in nice designs

On what basis do you think the reduce SIDS risk? What is there about the box that is different to a basket/crib/cot?

They're cute and I love the idea of them, but realistically I can't see it surviving a poonami.

I understand they are 'popular' in Finland because the government give them to all new mothers (they have things like clothes in them).

Comes full of baby clothes carefully chosen by someone else. I'd rather choose my own ...

The benefits of these (which i like) is that they are eco friendly, the box can be used for storage later on which is a lovely way of storing babies keepsakes and reduces SIDS. They are moveable like a moses basket but last longer and the baby hasn't got as much room to move around a lie on their front which increases the risk of SIDS.

With regards to poogate, I believe that you can clean them with a lightly damp cloth and because it is a solid surface, much easier than trying to get pooh out of the sides of a wicker moses basket. Also, they actually come with a mattress and fitted sheet, at least the ones on ebay do, and babies are more likely to pooh on what they are lying on. I never experienced my first born pooing on the sides of the cot.

They have been proven to reduce SIDS, not sure how but i guess it is because they are small, compact and so not much room for the baby to wriggle about on their tummies as all newborns should sleep on their backs until the age of 1 to reduce cot death/SIDS. With a cot and moses basket, there is always room for them to roll over, especially with a cot, but these are mean't to last the baby up until 8 months of age.

Yes, they are given away in Finland for free to new mothers, but new mothers are also offered a cash grant but always choose the box, mainly because it comes with everything the baby will need like baby grows etc.

They are on ebay UK for 74.99 pounds. The ones you have seen come with a lot more than the ones on ebay which just come with a mattress, sheet and swaddle blanket.

My baby never pooed on the sides of the cot either. How would that even happen?!

Good luck keeping your newborn on their back though if you have one like mine. He rolls always

Are the ones on ebay supplied with safe mattresses, or are they cheap
copies of the Finnish ones?

I think the point is that the box doesn't allow the baby to move around as much thereby reducing the risk of the baby rolling over and thus reducing the risk of SIDS.

I've not used them but I was pregnant when I first heard about them and thought it was a wonderful idea.

We had a sleepyhead mattress, it's like a pod, lovely and cosy, DD loved it and would sleep in there so happily!

I haven't seen one so that might be it but I can't imagine how it would fit an 8 month old if a newborn can't roll! I do think they look very good though

I'm confused, if there is no room to move around then how will it last 8 months? My DS outgrew his Moses basket at 6 months.

I would use it as long as it's not overpriced, yeah it's a box but the baby doesn't care. It's nice to have something you can use again.

I believe that there is plenty of room to grow lengthwise, just not as much sideways as the more room you give a baby at the side, the more likely they are to turn over.

I believe that they come with all safety checks. I wouldn't buy anything for my baby that isn't safety tested, besides, in this country, it would be illegal to supply a mattress that doesn't confirm to requirements.

But is it the box itself that has decreased Finnish incidence of neo-natal death, or what it represents: active out-reaching by the government to improve baby health and baby care, largely by providing care essentials within the box? This coincided with improved healthcare - it was a condition that mothers attended a maternity appointment before they could obtain the box. The box itself is sometimes credited with improving cot death rates because previous to its introduction 75 years ago, babies commonly slept in their parents' bed. I can't see anywhere they are safer than conventional cots per se. If small size / prevention of rolling are what you are after, I should think a Moses basket is better (certainly narrower).
