large crib or small cot? and where from

I can not fit a full size cot in my bedroom and will need baby to be in with me for at least 1 year. I am tempted to buy a crib and then find swcond hand smallish cot on ebay later, when needed. How long do cribs last? is 6 months pushing it?
Can you buy cot top changers for space saver cots? Has anyone got any general space saving ideas for baby bedroom furniture? please help me as getting in a complete tizz with choices.

Have you tried a travel cot - these often come with changing mats that go over the top as well. They are slightly smaller than normal cots - worth checking the measurements?
