Covid

Are colds etc going around?

worriedatthemoment · 02/08/2021 10:33

Dh has a nasty cold with a very slight cough ( due to bunged up) lots of sneezing he did a lvt test and negative and also a pcr yesterday , which has just come back negative , so now we are free to leave isolation.
Is there normal colds etc now circulating as he def has what I would describe as a heavy cold.
So he is practicing good hygenie and he will stay home from work until better as nobody wants a cold as well, and none of us want it as it will mean testing again.
Ds about 10 days ago had a sore throat and a slightt cold , which lasted about 3 days , are there really just colds going around as well?

Most likely, I have a horrid cough at the moment which I can’t shake off but negative pcr and lft tests so must be some other virus

giletrouge · 02/08/2021 10:37

Why wouldn't there be colds? The common cold has not suddenly been eradicated?

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 02/08/2021 10:37

Colds are always going around

Lou573 · 02/08/2021 10:38

Yes, certainly in my house

worriedatthemoment · 02/08/2021 10:39

@giletrouge i know just don't know many with one and normally not so many in august time more of a winter thing , dh doesn't normally get colds but I guess with all sd not been exposed to germs etc
Glad its negative as now I can go back to work as only started new job last week after losing my job first lockdown ,

Yes definitely going around. We've had to test again this morning.

I'm just fed up now 😤

Heavymetaldetector · 02/08/2021 10:51

We've all just had a nasty cough and temperature thing all lft and pcr negative. The gp said that all the winter bugs are going around now because they've had less chance to circulate earlier in the year due to lockdown and no one is immune to them by now as they would normally have been

Sunshinegirl82 · 02/08/2021 10:51

I have a horrible cold type thing at the moment, headache, body aches, snotty, cough, 2lft's and a PCR all negative.

I think it's just a natural result of lots more mixing and everyone's immune systems being a bit sluggish due to a lack of challenge over the last year.

It's one of the key reasons why it was suggested that stage 4 of the reopening wasn't delayed further as it would have made the resurgence of all non covid viruses much worse if it happened in Winter/flu season.

LemonLemonLemon · 02/08/2021 10:53

Yes, I heard somewhere as well that our natural immunity has waned due to lack of exposure so there could be a good few flare ups of common illnesses

Intherightplace · 02/08/2021 10:53

There seems to be a nasty "flu type" bug, but not Covid doing the rounds here. Several people I know have been knocked out for a couple of weeks and another couple of weeks before they feel back to normal, but repeated lateral flow and PCR tests negative.

Apparently norovirus, which is usually a winter bug, is much higher than normal for the time of year too.

worriedatthemoment · 02/08/2021 10:53

@FlatToppedTree yes we had to isolate and test about 10 days ago as ds2 was unwell and then again now, just hoping that myself and ds1 don't pick it up and then we end up isolating again.

I am ill At the moment with the worst headache you can imagine.I just won't go away.
Really tired and upset stomach occasionally.
I have done several LFTs, all negative.
I presume it's just a virus, but I wish it would go away.

MoaningMeowing · 02/08/2021 11:21

Just before term finished we all ended up with horrible colds/sore throats/nasty coughs.

One kid came in coughing his lungs up on the Monday, by the following Monday I had two days off work pretty much bed bound. Half the kids had at least one day off.

I was taking a lateral test every day just incase and my MIL was flapping around incase I had had Covid. I felt 5x worst than when I had covid last summer.

I’m hoping going forward that people will be cautious of passing things around. Gone of the days of having to solider into the office with a cold.

Passthecontrol · 02/08/2021 11:22

No, all other viruses have ceased to exist, there's only covid nowHmm.

Sorry but what a daft question.

You need yo do a PCR if you have symptoms not LFT.

I agree to an extent but we do actually need to keep our exposure to the general viruses that we coexist with up. I think people are being hit harder by "standard" viruses at the moment because our immune systems haven't been challenged as regularly as they would normally be.

You see it when young children start nursery/school for 6 months or so they are constantly ill and eventually their immune systems catch up and they come out the other side.

I think we need to be careful not to go too far the other way.
Dumpypumpy · 02/08/2021 11:31

My kids have had 3 colds since May and all negative pcr. I do have a vivid imagination sometime, but I do wonder if the virus has mutated to escape being picked up on pcr tests which Is why rates are seeming to drop suddenly , but people are still ill with coughs and symptoms on here at the moment ! 🤦🏻‍♀️

alloalloallo · 02/08/2021 11:32

I had an absolute stinker of a cold a couple of weeks ago. Felt like shite, was convinced it was Covid.

Negative LFT and 2 negative PCRs - I wasn’t convinced the first negative PCR was right so did another

MyFloorIsLava · 02/08/2021 11:35

DH's cold turned into a horrible secondary chest infection. Mine has turned into raging sinusitis and I want to claw my own face off. DS (4) is asthmatic and susceptible to everything since he had bronchiolitis as a newborn; he's struggling to shake his cold and noticeably lost weight. At one point I packed a bag ready to take him to hospital. DD(7) was only a bit unwell for a few days. All PCR and LF tests negative for everyone, 'just' colds.

worriedatthemoment · 02/08/2021 11:45

@Passthecontrol yes fair enough , but thats all we hear about now and if you have a cough or cold people automatically think covid , we were convinced his would come back positive as just all you hear and don't really now anyone for a while who just had a cold, ds2 we put down to his hayfever but maybe he had a bug and this is what dh caught

worriedatthemoment · 02/08/2021 11:47

I suppose I asked as this has me all paranoid and wanted to make sure others have colds as we will now all return to work ( except for dh - who can do some home working ) and so makes me think what if pcr was wrong or can you take them to early, but thats just me and covid sent me more into overdrive as I worry more about spreading it to others than actually getting it as such

I was in hospital with DD2 on Saturday afternoon after ringing 111 and them sending an ambulance due to DD having a really nasty cold/virus and being unable to walk or being quite unresponsive. A&E was full of young children with exactly the same symptoms and the Dr said that there is a really bad virus going about at the moment. She's a lot better now but still not herself, it's completely wiped her out. The Dr seemed to know exactly what it was as soon as we got there and didn't test her for Covid.

@worriedatthemoment - I was in hospital with my youngest last week & I cannot tell you how busy & full they were with children with viruses other than covid. It was like a conveyor belt of coughing, vomiting children. RSV, bronchilitis, tonsillitis, norovirus, fevers that wouldn’t come down .. every child negative for covid.

The docs & nurses said they’ve never seen anything like this in summer before. It’s basically a delayed winter. Viruses are having a party as we unlock & mix again. They also said lockdown babies born from March 2020 onwards are really suffering as their immune systems haven’t had chance to build to where they should be ☹️

Bobholll · 02/08/2021 13:07

@elmfield4 - yes! Just like my daughter. She was refusing to eat, drink or really move. Just slept a lot. She became seriously dehydrated & needed fluids. It was scary. No obvious cause, red tonsils, red ears but no bacterial infection. Just a bad virus!

Echobelly · 02/08/2021 13:12

Yup, I had an awful cold with really blocked nose and 3-day severe sore throat 3 weeks ago, daughter also sniffly so we tested as I'd heard Delta could be cold-like - but both negative. She did say a bad cold had been going round school that wasn't COVID, A few friends have had similar. I've also heard it's winter viruses coming out now.
