What happened with that clubbing experiment in Liverpool?

And there was a football match experiment there too wasn't there?

Nothing has been reported about the results of either of them.

I wonder if they both contributed to the massive growth in cases in the UK at the moment ...

I'm just watching a Newsnight report that says lateral flow tests should be thrown in the bin, they're so useless. Weren't they testing people with these before and after the Liverpool events?

LF are shite.
My dc school tested them on various items.
Oranges, lemons, toilet rim etc. All came back positive!

I’m fairly sure that the “initial results” from the test events was that spread didn’t significantly increase, although I don’t remember any more detailed analysis being released; possibly because Delta then happened...

There’s a test event at Edgbaston this week, 18k people at the cricket. And 22k at the Euros. Hopefully we’ll get more info from these ones...

www.standard.co.uk/news/politics/covid-test-pilot-events-15-cases-west-end-revival-june-21-oliver-dowden-b937048.html

Just 15 cases of Covid-19 emerged among 58,000 people who took part in events ranging from the Brit Awards to the FA Cup final.

Just four cases of Covid occurred across the entire 17 days of the World Snooker Championships, staged indoors at Sheffield’s Crucible Theatre.

Zero cases emerged from the Brits, even though the audience could mingle at tables and in boxes without masks.

There were only two cases among 5,900 pop-lovers at an outdoor music festival at Sefton Park, Liverpool, and none at all at the reduced-capacity football at Wembley Stadium, indicating that summer festivals, sporting events and entertainments held outdoors are very safe.

Nine cases were found among 6,000 revellers who packed into a nightclub in Liverpool over two days without masks. The relatively higher incidence confirmed that clubbing is the toughest part of the night economy to bring back safely but is not seen as so high as to rule out the reopening of venues.

Wow. That doesn't sound like a very good idea - at the moment ...

@AlecTrevelyan006 - are they testing with Lateral flow tests?

How can they be sure there's so few cases?

And how is it spreading so much in the UK as a whole but not at these events?

Sorry for so many questions - I'm about to answer the last one with a question ... could it be because the Delta variant wasn't dominant when the Sefton Park festival was on and the football at Wembley Stadium?

In which case the Edgbaston test event this weekend and the Euros may be more problematic.

False positives are fine. They are right-side failures. It is false negatives which are dangerous.

Thanks OP I forgot about that and very interested!

As an aside. On the newsnight lateral flow thing.

I missed some and wanted more info. Couldn't find it on BBC was expecting it to be front page news. Couldn't see it on covid section.

Googled. Loads of info about where to get them etc until way down one piece in guardian one in metro.

I was a bit Hmm esp about BBC. They often seem to have stuff about covid on newsnight but not a hint on main news even if feels like big story.

As at the beginning I'm thinking that the BBC is essentially disseminating the message the govt wants the population to hear. (Guessing not many people watch newsnight compared to news at 10/ website).

DH said there were a lot of false negatives.

OTOH if they're shit and the hospitalisations etc are way lower than being then that's pretty good!

Royal Ascot is another test event next week, with 12,000 people attending each day. Need a negative LFT test and then need to do 2 PCR tests

I think I remember reading that only about 40% of the people in the Liverpool tests bother to take the day 5 testing.

And that’s before you get to the problem with a single test on day 5 not being a very iOS way of measuring spread.

So I think the answer is we don’t have a clue.

We've heard jack shit.

Which probably means that the experiments didn't give the result the government wanted and hence they don't want Joe Public knowing the truth.

DH is off to edgbaston tomorrow (and very excited about it) He’s had to submit a negative LFT to get in, sounds like there are masks inside for moving around but no social distancing and then he takes 2 LFTs after the event.

I'm going today as well, it's actually an LFT to get in, plus a PCR today and in a few days. The PCRs are for the research and are voluntary, the LFT to get in is compulsory. And yes, masks when moving around but not when seated. I don't know the capacity at Edgbaston so not sure how full it will be with 18,000 people but everyone I'm going with is vaccinated, three of us fully (my sister is 39 so has only had one jab, a week ago).

False negatives are definitely possible so if you have symptoms you should use a PCR to be sure. LFTs are useful for catching asymptomatic cases as it's better than not testing at all. And the twice weekly LFTs are good because the chances of multiple false negatives are very low.

They are not accurate - you need pcr tests.

SandysMam · 12/06/2021 06:11

@Citycat1 I would get a pcr test with those symptoms, it can’t hurt and it is good to know for sure if you have it.

I came on to say this!

The fact they only found a small number of positives was, as ever, due to not bloody doing it properly Angry

They don't know enough to be shouting loudly that's for sure.

How effective are lateral flow tests? Me and my family have a nasty virus with some covid symptoms. (Fever, sore throat, phlegm producing cough) I have lateral flow tests at home. All are coming back negative. Anyone got them and had false negatives?

Yes many many times (not me personally!), this is the whole reason they are shit.

Get a pcr test and isolate until negative result.

You need a PCR test with any symptoms. Them's the rules.

Yup it's not that the results were bad so the government don't want us to know, it's that the results were good so the media don't want us to know Grin

It's been reported quite widely that there were only 15 positive results from all of the test events. I'm not sure how so many on this thread have missed that.
