I find this hard to believe tbh, will absolutely all restrictions end on June 21st? So no more restrictions on our lives apart from masks and SD? So we can go back to normal like it was in 2019?

No & that's not what they said!!

Step 4 - not before 21 June
Social contact
By Step 4 which will take place no earlier than 21 June, the government hopes to be in a position to remove all legal limits on social contact.

Business, activities and events
We hope to reopen remaining premises, including nightclubs, and ease the restrictions on large events and performances that apply in Step 3. This will be subject to the results of a scientific Events Research Programme to test the outcome of certain pilot events through the spring and summer, where we will trial the use of testing and other techniques to cut the risk of infection. The same Events Research Programme will guide decisions on whether all limits can be removed on weddings and other life events.

As we move through each of these phases in the roadmap, we must all remember that COVID-19 remains a part of our lives. We are going to have to keep living our lives differently to keep ourselves and others safe. We must carry on with ‘hands, face, space’. Comply with the COVID-Secure measures that remain in place. Meet outdoors when we can and keep letting fresh air in. Get tested when needed. Get vaccinated when offered. If we all continue to play our part, we will be that bit closer to a future that is more familiar.

If nightclubs open, and I know it's not guaranteed, then things like DC wearing masks to school should be over too though?

Well either they remove all legal limits on social contact or they don’t. I don’t u see stand that excerpt...

Now there's a new Indian variant they're worried about. Step 4 may happen in Spring 2022 if were lucky at this rate

I think they'll get rid of all restrictions in June and we'll have a normal summer.

Then autumn will see the effects of these new variants and we'll be facing lockdown again.

However, so may ppl will have had the vaccine that no-one will adhere to it.

Not sure what will happen in that case.

RoseRedRoseBlue · 18/04/2021 01:25

I am starting to understand why people are reluctant to have the vaccine, given all it was meant to represent,.

@OytheBumbler Good luck persuading ppl to have boosters if they do another Christmas lockdown. But at least ppl wont be fooled twice and spend money on a Christmas that doesnt happen AGAIN

Will the B117 variant that caused us to have a November lockdown, invent Tier 4, cancel Christmas and live in lockdown since New Year have spontaneously gone away by June 21st?

Will covid of all variants have gone away by June 21st?

Is our government's covid response effective at preventing new variants from coming in or in containing new variants that emerge?

Will everyone in the U.K. be fully vaccinated by June 21st?

Will everyone in the world be fully vaccinated by June 21st?

Globally does the pandemic seem to be waning?

Do the new variants all seem to be less dangerous and more "like flu" than older variants?

Will life go back to normal on June 21st?

I'd like to think so, if people can be crammed together in a hot sweaty environment shouting and singing and dancing then there's no need at all for our dc to be sat wearing a mask in school

I actually don't think I'll manage if we go in to another lock down. I've been on maternity leave the whole time (and WFH due to pregnancy before that).
If things don't go back to normal"-ish" by summer I really don't feel capable of returning to work. How are other people keeping positive? I'm trying my best but I just can't see how people can get through, the economy is fucked, poverty is going to shoot through the roof, children are being robbed of so much, people are scared to hug their relatives.
I feel so so weary and down about it all.

I think now they’ve said it, it will be really hard for them to backtrack. So many people are holding onto the May and June dates. I really don’t think the majority will comply with another lockdown anyway. Life feels pretty normal to me right now and there’s no way I’d go back to it.

There is a change in the feeling when out and about now. People have the tools they need know such as easy access to testing - can do a LFT before visiting someone, for example. Vaccination for the vulnerable groups has either been done or is available. The restrictions will become less necessary.

I do wonder why my children need masks in class, for example, if everyone at school has had a negative LFT.

I've been reading on MN that people won't comply for much longer for about a year now. And yet they keep complying, for the most part. The mass resistance movement that some people on here keep waiting for just isn't coming. Basically, if everything around you is closed, you are sent home to work and your kids are off school, you're kind of forced to comply. You can refuse to wear your mask properly or do whatever protest measures float your boat, but you'll mainly comply with future lockdown measures.

Sorry!

Obviously no one can know but I've not heard anyone say that life will go back to what it was pre covid on any date.

Are you in England? The planned easing of restrictions is just that unless I've misunderstood, there's no magic date when we all simply go back to normal

Overthebow · 18/04/2021 07:21

@GalesThisMorning do you think the majority are complying now? I don’t think they are. Everywhere I go there are groups larger than 6, no distancing in groups, people are going inside others houses. In my circle everyone was strictly complying before, but now no one is. As Tumbleweed said there’s been a big change in feeling the last few weeks. I don’t think there will be a mass protest or anything like that but people are just quietly getting on with life.

But people aren't complying, they are just seeing people as normal inside with groups of friends. No one is policing them. And the government know this, they are just relying on those good old sticklers to the rules to keep the balance.

@bellamountain exactly. And the number of those completely complying are going down. I used to be one of those, but I’m not now.

Given the state of the pandemic in countries with less advanced vaccine rollouts, I don't thinking international travel will return to normal, even for people who have had both doses.

But I hope life in the UK will include welcoming my friends into my home, dining out, school without masks and for the NHS to start clearing the backlog of delayed treatments.

@Thereoncewasahorridmama they aren’t concerned about the Indian variant, a bunch of fame hungry professors and scientists who like their 5 mins in the spotlight too much are offering their opinions to the MSM who are lapping it up. If it was truly a concern or that bad it would be on the red list and Boris wouldn’t be going there next week.

They ramp up coverage on variants each time they ease a set of restrictions, it was SA at the end of March and now its India. It’s quite clearly a tactic to prevent people relaxing too much. Either that or the timing of these announcements is a huge coincidence....

I don’t think life will be like 2019 in June but I do think we are heading there. States in the US that are fully open are still seeing cases plummet as is Israel there is no reason why we should be any different.

I don't even know if I'm fully complying anymore to be honest. I've lost track of what we can do now. I'm doing my best.

But if we go back into lockdown I will comply with the majority of the rules, as will all of us, because you can't fight your way into a pub which is closed. For me, anytime the kids are off school life is more difficult and most definitely not normal. That's all I was saying. Hopefully it doesn't happen again. Who knows

I believe a lot depends on the rest of the world being vaccinated.

As teacher, I'm expecting some sort of restrictions to happen next autumn/ winter at times, if no home learning, certainly potentially bubbling, masks etc or even just twice weekly lateral flow tests and tests and self isolation of children who test positive, so you'd need bubbles for that.

I can't see that not happening until we have a handle on new variants and new forms of vaccine.

Opening up everything with no restrictions at all will result in some infections especially among unvaccinated children (at this point all children) and adults.

They'll be significantly more new variants until the rest of the world is vaccinated.

It's in our interest to make that happen.
