Covid

Christmas needs to be cancelled.

So the suggestion to make it possible for the world to go and be super spreaders at Christmas is to stay in lockdown until Christmas, then open up for five days, then go back into lockdown for another 25 days (at least), five days for every day we’re out of lockdown.

Are people really that desperate to have a get together they could have at any other time of the year, maybe in the summer when this pandemic is under control, that they’re willing to spend months in lockdown to achieve it? Really?

My personal opinion is that it is our duty as a society to have a low key Christmas regardless of whether they take this ridiculous measure or not.

I understand that for some they want to see family at Christmas, but these ridiculous suggestions have gone too far.

Just cancel Christmas and give us an extra bank holiday next year to make up for it.

Tbh it’s not going to make a jot of difference to tell people it’s cancelled. Firstly, it will go ahead because we have a 25th December every year. And unless they want to heavy handedly arrest people they will do as they please because who is going to stop them?

I think "What are you giving Granny for Christmas this year? Covid-19?" needs to be on advertising posters everywhere.

I agree with you, OP.

I dont think it matters what the government say people will do what they eant anyway.

As the above poster put it we’re all in different situations also technically no one actually knows if this Christmas will be their last! Any one of us could die at any time for any reason!

I think it's a good idea. People will be celebrating Christmas regardless, and there aren't enough police to stop everyone.

A lockdown in January is a great idea anyway, whatever is decided for the Christmas period. The last thing I want during the dark mornings of January is for my boss to start wanting me to come back into the office when I can work more effectively from home. A January lockdown helps people stick to their resolutions, no pub trips for example. And of course if all the Remoaners are right we'll be in the midst of no-deal Brexit border chaos, lorries will be in 50 mile tailbacks either side of the channel, shops will be empty, so being tucked up safely at home is probably a good idea!

Well there would be ways to limit the spread...

Close the travel networks so people can’t move from area to area and spread the virus accordingly.

Keep the pubs closed so people can’t gather in numbers in public places.

Most of the railways are down between Christmas and new year anyway because of engineering, a few more days won’t make much difference...

And it could be any one of our last Christmas this year. In fact it could be any one of our last day today.

I agree with you but the problem is that people will just ignore the advice. It will be completely unenforceable. I don't see the police and army patrolling the streets on Xmas day. So the best thing to do is make it as safe as possible. Unfortunately, that will prob mean a massive restriction in movement and freedom before and after.

I'd rather be able to leave my house in the winter months and see my friends and family on a regular basis again sooner than face total lockdown for the sake of one day. But just read the daily mail comments and you will see the voice of the 'people' banging on about their Christian and British rights to do eat a roast turkey once a year and how the tories are going soft and Covid is a liberal hoax.... we aren't dealing with the world's smartest people here.

@makingmammaries Are you for real? What if granny lives alone, is a young fit, healthy 60 and is a willing to mix with a limited number of family members for the day.

Good grief, what you suggest is just horrendous. Imagine the pain and guilt it would cause, and all just to feed the curtain twitchy brigade !!

And if we’re staying in lockdown before and after Christmas the schools need to be closed.

I was a supporter of keeping schools open but evidence is that far more children are catching it this year. My nephew already has five children in his class tested positive and so they’re all having to self isolate, and it’s a story I’m seeing everywhere.
If we’re going to do any kind of lockdown then it needs to be done completely.

I thought the unions were being far too dramatic but actually I think they were right and schools need to be closed now until the end of January.

Christmas doesn’t have to be cancelled it just has to be different- so what you said about no big get togethers or get togethers at all really. But Christmas will happen in some form or other as it does every year.

Better for them to plan around people mixing households at Christmas than assume that nobody will and just watch the cases rise afterwards.

At the very least you can’t expect university students to go home. That could have a big impact in itself.

Also the whole point of this current lockdown was so that we could have more freedom at Christmas.

The virus isn’t a short term thing. ‘Banning Christmas’ won’t prevent a future lockdown.

It won't just be for 5 days though will it. Christmas Eve through to New Years Eve is always a free for all when people visit family and get together.

If we're given 5 days over Christmas (say Christmas Eve to the 28th) I can imagine people thinking, 'ah well, what's a few more days' and cracking on with socialising until the New Year.

I'm undecided as to what is best in the long run though!

I've gone with yanbu, although I don't think it's a case of 'cancelling Christmas' it's a case of 'low key Christmas'. Massive family gatherings are not necessary, having your terminally ill relative over is entirely understandable and reasonable.

I agree with you that being able to see a few more people, for longer than a few days, is preferable to a free for all on 25th Dec followed by a month of disruption to everyone's lives.

The Christmas thing aside - what do people think an extra bank holiday is going to be worth to the self employed? Or forcing the small business and hospitality to stay closed until Jan?
It is easy to stay WFH, or being on furlough, or not having any idea of the ruin people are going through right now.

Yabu to say "cancelled Christmas". Are people not understanding taht doing something on smaller scale doesn't mean cancelled?

Cheeseboardandmincepies · 19/11/2020 08:55

No Christmas shouldn’t be cancelled but I do think the pubs/clubs etc should remain shut over the period. Drunk people are the super spreaders.
