Covid

What am I supposed to do?

My husband and me have both come down with a cough. And hes got a bit of a temperature so we've arranged to get two tests done tomorrow.. the problem is we have a 3 month old baby and we are running very low on formula. I got paid today so the plan was to nip to asda or tesco like we usually do on payday and top up. Obviously we may not have covid but we are trying to follow the guidance. We have no immediate family in the area and no friends who drive or live this way. No delivery slots at any of the supermarkets. Looked on deliveroo and ubereats and for starters the delivery fee is at least 4 pound, I know its not a lot but when your husband is furloughed again and im on maternity every penny counts but also the milk is an extra four pound. Its 8 pound for cow and gate in the supermarket, 12 pound on the deliveroo supermarkets. Im not here to complain and im not here to start a debate. I just dont know what to do. Me and my husband have food in. But my little girl has hardly any. Please don't slate me for running low on milk. Were leaving payday to payday as it is.

Ask on your local Facebook group. Explain the situation and someone will drop some round to you. Your local council should have a helpline too for people who need support with Covid related issues.

Where do you live OP?
Like pp said. Almost everywhere in the UK has some form of support network in Facebook. I’m sure nobody would mind dropping your formula off for you.

Your council should have a Covid helpline, and they will be able to signpost you to volunteers who will shop for you

I honestly don't know why I didn't think of Facebook. Ill pop a post up and check my local councils page. Be nice if this cough had come tomorrow instead 😂😂

How do you pay strangers who drop off groceries for you? Do strangers really stump up in advance and then you do a bank transfer or something?

Also, isn’t it still legal to go to the shops in this circumstance? I thought it was only illegal if you have a positive test or if T&T instruct you to isolate, and neither of those things has happened yet, Yes it’s against the guidance, but if no one will / can help then surely you can’t just let a baby starve??

@Lemons1571 I took some shopping for someone who was desperate back in March. They paid me by bank transfer when I dropped it off.

@lemons1571 exactly! I read the government guidelines today about 4 times and It all seems so vague. I dont want to just go out for a bit of casual shopping, I want to feed my child. I get paid weekly so every Friday we go get formula milk. I've put a post on Facebook but it just feels a bit weird. Maybe I'm overthinking it

I would just go and get the formula, you haven't got a positive result yet and baby needs formula

Local Facebook group or ask a neighbour. People will be happy to help.

If there is no one who can help you are allowed to buy essential supplies like this.

I’d buy some formula for a baby if I saw a post like this and was local, no judgement

There is a number here for nhs responders you could call to see if you can get help:

Try not to feel weird about it. If I saw your post on facebook I would absolutely help out. I think you are right to stay home.

Our local taxi company is excellent and would do this kind of job but there would be a few quid added understandably.

Hope you both feel better soon.

Me too, I'd just go and get it. In and out.

I suspect in the real world and not mumsnet land, most people do pop out during isolation. I would anticipate they go late at night when there’s no one around, to an empty supermarket, keep a mask on and keep a million miles away from anyone else. 30 second dash, get a fortnight worth of formula and leave quickly.

I don’t hear a lot about the nhs army and the millions of volunteers all dashing about Sainsburys, doing hundred quid shopping trips for very large families that are isolating. Perhaps someone could put me right if this is indeed the case.

I’m sure the guidance says something about when you have kids it is understood that not all the guidance will be possible all the time. So until it becomes law (positive test or T&T) then you just have to do the best you can?

No, don't go shopping, it's incredibly irresponsible what some posters are telling you to do.

Hopefully someone will respond on Facebook. If not, what about neighbours? Any of DH's work mates? And online your council should have some contact numbers.

Hope you both shake it off ok 🤞🏼

I would think about who would be willing & able to look after DD if you do both feel too bad

If the Facebook group won’t help, call out of the window as soon as you see one of your neighbours (or ring them if you have their number). People will help.

Please don’t go to the shop for formula unless you really don’t have any other options. If you, try to find a smaller local shop you can ring and see if they will take payment over the phone and bring the tub outside to leave beside your car to reduce contact.

Thanks guys, we live 10 seconds from a tesco express, ran down and grabbed a fortnights worth of formula, mask on, paid on card, ran back. Store was empty so don't feel too bad. Thank you for the help 😁

That's good OP 👍 It's all very easy posters saying ask a random on Facebook or shout out your window but in the real world you main priority was feeding your baby. I would have done the same.

People were just trying to help, no one would think OP would just simply starve her baby if she couldn’t get help

All sorted now and we are fully stocked up and ready to stay in for 2 weeks if results are positive. Grandparent's are on standby to drive 100 miles to collect baby girl if we get very sick but I'm hoping not.
