Of course - no one has a crystal ball (If you do , please share what you see in it!) but I wondered where you think we will be in 6 months time in regards to Covid-19? (May/June 2021)

It is hard to predict due to the nature of the beast but my predictions are as follows:

  • Roll out and regular use of tests with results within 15 mins
  • Roll out of a vaccine across higher risk groups, perhaps include those above the age of 50. Possible roll out of 2 vaccines, Oxford and Pfizer
  • Social Distancing and other measures still in place but more industries opening up, particularly retail units
  • Increase in travel corridors due to testing at airport entrance points (possible vaccinations?)
  • Development of better treatment, fingers crossed for lower deaths and hospital admissions

Overall I think we will be in a positive place!

What are your thoughts? Feel free to disagree with me!

I think it may be more positive than that. I think:
Higher risk groups will already have been vaccinated
Restrictions will slowly be being relaxed
Larger groups able to meet
Social distancing and masks in public but social distancing relaxed amongst family and friends
Most work places opened up
Plans in place to open up higher risk activities like theatre
Fast tests at airports to allow travel with minimal quarantine
Fast tests available to purchase if you want them

I think 6 months will be when we start getting some normality again if the vaccinations are successful and start around Christmas/new year.

However, there will be some level of restrictions and distancing ongoing.

@Racoonworld I really do hope so.

I look back at where we were 6 months ago and despite rates being high again at the moment there has been a lot of development, including knowledge about the virus, testing and treatment. At the start of the outbreak most people weren't even being tested and vaccination trials were none existent / at the beginning of their journey.

I do fear for many industries, particularly; the hospitality and travel sector. I hope improvements will really boost those that are struggling and I know there are many that are. (I have personal experience of job losses by DP who works in a job funded by government and it is a stressful time for many)

Without masks, without schools sending pupils every 5 minutes, able to socialise in larger groups inside and out. Maybe still no large gatherings like concerts or football matches and possibly covid tests prior to going abroad maybe.

Depends on vaccination progress. I think if all or most vulnerable groups are vaccinated by this point all restrictions will be eased as soon as flu season is over and seasonal pressure is eased on the NHS. Why wouldn't they? Lots of sources saying 'back to normal by spring'. June is summer so hoping it'll be all over by then but may be wishful thinking!

@3littlewords a world without masks, Oh the dream!

It seems so strange to think back to a world where we could just pop to the shops and not have to worry about the risks associated with doing so and also having to wear a mask!

I am really glad others are as positive as I am. I am really beginning to feel hope and I haven't in a long while.

That takes us to May. We'll be through flu season. We'll have all had some sun and exercise, our immune systems will be picking up. Due to the seasonality of it, there'll be very little to worry about.

Probably still waiting for my vaccination, I’m in the number 8 category

I am afraid that there will be a covid-passport system. You'll need proof of your vaccination or this morning's test status to be able to leave home. It will all feeling very controlled & Big Brother.

So not positive, really. Quite suffocated actually.

I think we will be fairly similar to where we were last summer. Still a long way to go.

I do have reservations about testing at the airport - the virus can stay in your body for up to 90 days, so you may still show a positive result yet not be infectious. I am hoping that the tests developed would be able to distinguish between the two!

@JoeBidenIsGreat I would also be worried about a covid passport system, particularly if countries request it as mandatory yet we are physically unable to get one because they are (quite rightly) being prioritised for higher risk people.

@frozendaisy oh I hope so too!!!! have you got a break scheduled? We are really hoping to go on a european break in May/June but its hard to see where we will be by then!

@Theegghashatched I’m worried about that and unless there is a lot better travel insurance available I don’t want to risk thousands of pounds if I’m refused travel due to a test at the airport

So we're taking 11 May?

I suspect the people at the top of the priority list will have been vaccinated, there will still be a long way to go. BUT

I'd say we'll be largely back to normal but still wear masks in enclosed spaces and no indoor mass gatherings (say over 100 people) and I guess those who can work from home still will be most of the time.

GCSE exams in England will be cancelled. Not sure about A levels.

And parkrun will have restarted as it's outside. I hope.

We'll have to come back to this thread and see who amongst us was right.

I'd love more normality by May. My 30th was this May and it was full lockdown. The local takeaways had just reopened so we had a curry want a 31st birthday party.

I think everything will be normal. The vaccine will have been given to the most vulnerable, and there will be no restrictions to life at all. Those who are worried will naturally avoid certain places and wear masks etc, but the govt will be so desperate to get the economy going that they won't keep anything closed. Theatres stadiums etc will be open and at full capacity. Testing will be minimal. People just won't bother anymore if they get symptoms, they know the most vulnerable are protected. The treatments will be better and people will just be taking the risk and treating it like any other illness.

I just hope social distancing is a thing of the past by then. In fact I hope it's a thing of the past LONG before then.

I'd rather that than what the situation is currently.

Why? Many people will very likely have been vaccinated by then. There is also likely to be better treatments and faster testing. Why do you not foresee anything being better?

100% agree.
I just don't understand the idea that we'd be "almost normal but with social distancing". To me this is a complete contradiction. I'd cope better with everything being shut but everyone acting like actual natural human beings as we're doing nothing together than vice versa. Obviously not what I want exactly as jobs /economy etc but just making a point.

There is no normality as long as we're social distancing. Its the very opposite of every part of human nature/biology.
