Covid

Has anyone seen this doing the rounds on Facebook?

I've just seen this posted in a comment

"For those who are doubting the excess deaths in the U.K. from Covid-19 I emplore you to phone up any funeral directors and ask them about their waiting list.
Covid-19 is here, it is worse than they are telling us. The reason people get it worse the second time is because the first time they had it, their lungs were permanently damaged. When people with 3rd/4th rounds of infection start to show up, the rate of deaths will increase further.

I’ve been reading scientific papers published by the respiratory medicine community and the future isn’t looking so peachy. It is important that we all do our part to curb the virus and that we let them do their part to properly research therapies to help with the long term lung damage being caused right now. The sooner we can get some kind of vaccine in the community, even if it’s not effective for everyone, the better."

Does anyone have any knowledge of how true this is?

Tbh the spelling mistake of "implore" makes it lack credibility Hmm

Yeah, stopped reading at the use of "emplore".

That seems highly unlikely op that the excess deaths are due to the exact same small percentage of the population being re infected. In fact if you look at the demographics, and the average age of 82 years old dying from it, it’s highly unlikely a large percentage of them were infected before.

Honestly you need to not be believing shit you see on Facebook. And people shouldn’t be phoning funeral directors and asking about their waiting lists. Hmm

If you rang up a funeral director I do wonder what they'd say :D bugger off and come back when you're dead

They havent listed the papers they read, it's just someone having a random rant and being copied and pasted.

When seeing post, think who posted this, are they an expert in their field? What evidence have they provided? Why have they posted it (to scaremonger lies about the government covering up covid).

The figures do not back up the suggestion that funeral directors have waiting lists.
There are also a very small number of confirmed reinfections and those with long term lung damage are a very small proportion of people who have had covid. It's more likely that those who get it again will get a lesser reaction the second time.

That's just ridiculous. Along with the other ones they had 'if you want to go out now, don't assume they'll have room for you in the ICU''

There was no waiting list for my nannas funeral 2 weeks ago (not covid related)

That seems highly unlikely op that the excess deaths are due to the exact same small percentage of the population being re infected.

Yeah, that. And I don't think reinfection is as simple as just prior lung damage causing an increase in severity. Mild cases are more likely to reinfect sooner.

Apart from that it's positively sensible the the standard of a Facebook rant. It's true that there is no long term immunity and that deaths are increasing again.

The vaccine is on it's way, we just need to hunker down and get through winter.

Well, it is certainly true that Covid-19 can cause significant long-term lung damage.

Agree, even in high infection rate areas the numbers wouldn’t stack up for waiting lists. But the idea that people are catching it the third and fourth time is crazy, I think it’s something like seven percent of the population has had it.

In addition as said, if the average age of passing is 82, then it’s highly unlikely these folks were previously infected even once in their majority, never mind three or four times.

Lastly the death rate is very very low, I think about zero point five percent. And for most folks with no underlying condition and of working age it is fairly benign,

The whole thing is just silly scare mongering, it’s not even believable. I’m surprised any one would fall for it.

I wouldn’t be taking any notice of Facebook and it is encouraging people to bother funeral directors. Anyone can post any rubbish on Facebook, same as on here

Unserious stuff like that makes people less worried because they can't take it seriously!

Which is a shame because we do need to take it seriously, in order for schools and hospitals to stay open.

Funeral directors have better things to do than answer the phone and be asked questions about heir capacity from people on Facebook

So many reasons I cba to type out.

But generally, anything like this, anonymous or “my sister/auntie/neighbour/dog” is a nurse/dr/itu specialist and they told me this special insider info (in this case the undertaker..) is utter and complete bollocks.

Anyone who isn’t an epidemiologist, virologist, immunologist or otherwise directly related specialist working directly on CV-19 should keep traps shut. That includes a certain cancer specialist “Professor”.

It also doesn’t include “FACT”, in capitals as punctuation, which every internet researcher knows means the preceding statement is definitely true.

I don’t think encouraging people to ring funeral directors to ask about waiting lists is something to ‘emplore’ people to do.

‘Good morning I just wanted to ask you if you have a waiting list. I don’t need your services but was just curious’ Hmm

When people say the average age, do they mean the mean, median or mode?

I would have thought mode is the most useful.

I ignore facebook - it's mainly idiots spreading rubbish.

However, if you want to check on actual deaths from all causes the Office of National Statistics publish data on deaths and it is easy to see if the trend is up, down or as usual. That is far more reliable.

Report
LostAcre · 02/11/2020 07:56

I actually know a funeral director socially.

I don’t think I can bring myself to call him up just to ask about his waiting lists though. Even if he worked in a Tier 3 area, which he doesn’t.

It's not atypical to wait 6 weeks in the winter anyway, where I live (West Country), purely because we have a high elderly population and normal illnesses carry them off at a higher rate when it's cold and wet.

Tfoot75 · 02/11/2020 07:59

Well first of all there are no UK excess deaths at the moment so straight away it's clearly nonsense. I am sure there will be an excess deaths position very soon in the UK, but right now, there isn't, calling a funeral home isn't likely to confirm that Hmm
