Why doesn’t China have a second wave?

China had the initial wave of infections early 2020 then hardly any cases since. Their population is much bigger than UK. How can they have it so under control. Seems suspicious to me.

They test whole cities in a few days and enforce quarantine strictly.

Obviously it’s because China released the virus and everyone has got the vaccine already. Duuuuh

No, I think it’s because the Chinese will follow the government guidelines completely, where as everyone else tends to half heart it

We lived in China a few years ago so have lots of friends there. No one we know knows of anyone who has had it so I don’t think the figures are suspicious. They just did a proper lockdown where no one was allowed out at all, and testing is whole cities. Also, the government is much more powerful that here so people don’t break the rules!

Because they follow rules and their government can enforce rules much quicker and can be more strict?

Cause China has an entirely state control media and social media system.

Just because you havent heard of something happening in China doesnt mean it isnt hapoening

Also the Gov are very heavy handed.

I thought it was because the Chinese Government issues the figures and also censors the internet. So who really knows what are the true facts? Hmm

They are an authoritarian country which gives them the power to enforce quarantine etc on their citizens and other travellers. They mass test if there are any outbreaks and if you test positive there is no option to ride it out at home - you are taken to a covid hospital.

There is also a quarantine process for every person entering China. 2 weeks with rigorous daily monitoring - either hotel or home quarantine. We were taped into our apartment and had an electronic tag) for almost 2 weeks in March when we returned.

They were electronically "sealed" which meant the authorities could trace movement. Still very Draconian from a Western point of view but not quite the same as welding people inside so they couldn't get out in an emergency or to get supplies.

I live here in China. Our lives are pretty much normal here. It's not BS. They tested the whole of Qingdao in a few days and the government have very tight control over the population. People just follow the rules. We still wear masks on the metro despite no local transmission since March. Also no one is allowed in without completing government quarantine and can only come in with both negative Covid test in last 3 days and a negative antibodies test.

As pp said last time they welded people’s doors shut so they couldn’t leave their homes. I’d rather catch the virus (which I did) than leave in China.

Introvertedbuthappy · 01/11/2020 14:08

Aye, they didn't 'weld doors shut'. When we completed home quarantine in March we had a magnet on the door that would alert authorities if we opened it and had to message before we opened it (to leave out rubbish or pick up the delivery left on the doorstep). If we hadn't complied we would have been taken to a government quarantine but we're not idiots so we didn't break quarantine and when our release papers were signed got the magnet removed and were allowed to come and go as we liked.

Erm nope

Theres also that rather disturbing video of the woman screaming from inside her apartment as they fasten several bars across it

China has an incredibly poor record of human rights and also a strong reputation for withholding, misleading and false information. So, yes on the one hand, it is very likely that the virus spread may have been contained by very severely enforced lockdown rules with none of the flouting seen in the West. However, news coverage of this new virus was initially actively suppressed in China and those who leaked the information did not fare well. Another confusing aspect is that tests on tissues taken from patients in the west, for example in France, showed Covid infection months before it supposedly spread to the West. A great number of people reported extreme flu like symptoms as far back as last November, clouding the supposed timeline and start of this pandemic. There are also doubts about the scale of the number of deaths in China. In order to access any kind of public service in China and be officially registered or acquire a health code requires a mobile phone. Records showed that the number of active phone accounts in spring 2020 dropped by almost 21 million compared to the end of 2019. Even if some of the drop can be explained by the closure of some telecom companies, there is still a huge unexplained number of phone account holders vanishing. Another report showed huge numbers of coffins for cremation being ordered and dispatched in spring in the most affected regions that far surpass the official death toll reported by China. So, I expect the real figure to be en par with that of other countries or possibly even higher.

Phone holders disappeared as they all flew back to home countries. Many colleagues left it until the end of March then couldn't return as they shut the borders. One school here lost 227 staff that way! They didn't all die Hmm

Why isn't China, who harvest the organs of political prisoners but deny doing so (which includes journalists who try to expose the human rights abuses of citizens by the state), having a second wave?

This is the same Chinese State who say covid only started in Dec 2019 despite there being evidence for it already having spread to Europe in at least as early as November 2019 yeah?

They’re more obedient. They didn’t invite all their mates over for BBQs then go crazy on Twitter about Cummings.

Does anyone remember that panorama prog about China and the two young people who were reported to have been inciting public disorder on social media by accusing the government of covering up the actual death rate? They apparently disappeared one day never to be seen again. Sad

vanillandhoney · 01/11/2020 14:21

Because they literally welded people into their homes and would do so again if necessary. They will also happily arrest and possibly kill anyone who refuses to comply.

Do you really want to live like that? Hmm
