Work from home or have to be in school, seems a confused message.

Has shielding been reinstated?

Not shielding but limiting contacts/exposure.

Which you cant do in school 🤦‍♀️

He said something very muddled about working from home if you can't something or other?

I think we need a transcript.

It’ll be down to Heads I reckon.

Not clear at all. I wonder if individual schools can try and make working from home happen for some staff? Not easy.
Crazy to have HT's responsible for the risk to ECV staff. Having had a TA die, this has to be addressed.

He did say something like (and I did take note of the wording as best I could) "So what we are now saying, for those who are ECV is that if you can't work from home, don't go to work."

Of course, what he says isn't necessarily what he means.

That's how I understood it. That's half the staff out at my school.

That’s what he said. Which means a quarter of the staff out at my school. My children’s secondary closed last time before lockdown because of adult to child ratios. So schools will end up closing even quicker than I predict which is December.

If ecv are all sent home then we cant keep schools open can we.

Its going to be a mess.

ECV should not go to work if they can't wfh. I thought that was pretty clear.

And teachers cant wfh...

It'll take LAs and Academies the mon-weds to figure a joint approach and then we'll know.

I'm in no way convinced he won't back track and say it wasn't what he really meant and we were all misinterpreting his obvious intentions (which were nothing like the words coming out his mouth).

Yes, I work with schools, many have high proportions of ECV staff. Just having DSL/DDSL absent has closed schools last half term due to safeguarding, never mind large numbers of additional staff.

@PineappleUpsideDownCake not true. Many are and are supplying live video lessons if set up in their school.

Secondary teachers at least can WFH, though. If we have years that are at home, we could have teachers at home recording lessons for them, setting and marking work.

Shielding should have been reintroduced weeks ago and I strongly suspect we would not have as many hospitalisations now if we had.

The vast majority of shielders do not work outside the home. They should never have been expected to return to work.

What does ECV stand for - something chronically vulnerable?

What will happen if they can’t work from home or at school - will they still be paid?

Report
GreyWall · 31/10/2020 19:28

ECV extremely clinically vulnerable

Grey wall. Long term? While another ta is paid to take the class? Ive seen it in higher and adult ed, but percentage wise isn't goinn to be feesable in schools. Its why many schools closed early in March as there weren't the teachers.

Our primary couldnt afford that. I can see this getting interesting....

I don't know the answer, but would follow either teacher/staff terms and conditions or ECV 'terms and conditions' if the government has thought that out.

He can't reintroduce shielding as schools can't run without shielded teachers.
