People have been asked to “wear a systematic mask when you are inside in the presence of another person, even a loved one"

He's saying if you're with someone vulnerable.

RaspberryCoulis Thu 29-Oct-20 15:28:11

He's on BBC news right now, outside, not wearing a mask.

California also recommends face masks at home when you have guests.

www.cdph.ca.gov/Programs/CID/DCDC/Pages/COVID-19/CDPH-Guidance-for-the-Prevention-of-COVID-19-Transmission-for-Gatherings-10-09.aspx

People at gatherings may remove their face coverings briefly to eat or drink as long as they stay at least 6 feet away from everyone outside their own household, and put their face covering back on as soon as they are done with the activity.

The statement was abut indoors contacts though?

He's saying if you're with someone vulnerable.

I don't think he was, it seemed to refer to all.

Blueberries0112 Thu 29-Oct-20 16:20:28

But why??????

Augustbreeze Thu 29-Oct-20 16:26:22

To stop aerosol transmission of coronavirus, and specifically to stop their hospitals being overwhelmed which is starting to happen.

MadCatLady71 Thu 29-Oct-20 16:27:33

It was a section of the address during which he was talking specifically to older people and the vulnerable. He was asking them to pay extra special attention to keeping themselves safe, including being vigilant in their own homes and wearing masks around other people. He wasn’t telling everybody they have to wear masks at home.

Blueberries0112 Thu 29-Oct-20 16:31:24

I suppose if you can't live in a separate house, this is the next best thing but I always felt if one person has it in their home then it means everyone caught it

Augustbreeze Thu 29-Oct-20 16:47:39

No, even without masks transmission rate in families is less than 50%.

Augustbreeze Thu 29-Oct-20 16:48:25

No, a large study found that (even without masks) transmission rate in families is less than 50%.

Nowstrong Thu 29-Oct-20 17:08:28

The beginning of his phrase is : for the over 70s...
So this is a "if you're over 70, please wear a mask, even inside, with other people, as you don't know where they have been and who they've been sharing viruses with....

Sorry, hadn't read all the messages. You had already correctly translated what he said. x

So he's telling the vulnerable to wear masks, even though they do more to protect others not wearers??

timeforanewstart Thu 29-Oct-20 17:32:36

But we are told we wear masks to protect others so if only the vulnerable person wears one they won't actually be protected

TibetanTerrier Thu 29-Oct-20 17:37:30

So he's telling the vulnerable to wear masks, even though they do more to protect others not wearers??

Why not? If everyone wears one they're all protecting each other.

BlanchflowerTulip Thu 29-Oct-20 17:44:46

Can you take it off in the shower?

AChickenCalledDaal Thu 29-Oct-20 17:47:51

BlanchflowerTulip

Can you take it off in the shower?

Presumably that depends whether you are "in the presence of a loved one" in the shower ... grin

So he's telling the vulnerable to wear masks, even though they do more to protect others not wearers??

Surely that depends on what kind of mask? A simple cloth one, not much use as protection. FFP3 or surgical grade mask will of course protect the wearer.

Having read and watched this which shows pretty clearly how the virus transmits and builds up indoors, it's not entirely unreasonable if you're visiting or hosting an indoor visit from anyone you don't normally live with. Seems pretty sensible in fact. We live in strange times.
