Covid

Schools open for half a term now with no serious cases...

I know there's been lots of DC and teachers off either because they've had CV or been in close contact with someone who has. But it seems there hasn't been anyone very ill (hospital ill) because of this. So measures do appear to be working. As it's sounding like only the ecv are going to be getting vaccinated (if one ever appears), should just the DC with CV stay off school and parents be given the choice to keep their DC off if in the same bubble? Would be much less disruptive.

I'd like to see that, the disruption is ridiculous. But I can't see many others agreeing.

I'd like to see the stats backing up your assertion and also the considered opinion on whether half a term is long enough to make a judgment. If both positive then yes, I agree with op.

I'm convinced that if any teachers or school age DC were ill in hospital/dead it would be front page news.

I think you’re right ruby - it would be all over the news. 3 cases in our secondary school and parents keeping kids off with any symptoms. Lots of negative tests. So far better than I feared.

I think it will end up being this way sooner or later. Its too disruptive especially when children won't get the vaccine anyway, at least not for ages anyway.

I don’t agree with this in primary. The guidance acknowledges that social distancing between younger children isn’t possible. I think the flip side of this is the whole bubble should isolate in the event of a positive case since social distancing isn’t happening and there are no other measures to mitigate risks since masks aren’t allowed,

In secondary the students often have fixed seating plans across all lessons but are still mixing at lunchtime and down the corridors with no / minimal social distancing.

France have only been sending home the positive child however all children wear masks from 11+ in classrooms he classrooms and all staff must wear masks and visors in classrooms too. England’s schools guidance actively discourages this.

Would you also give their teachers this choice?

Trust me it wont be all over the news if teaches get ill/hospitalised.

Our school is no longer informing staff or parents of cases unless they sit next to the covid case.

It is getting more and more brushed under the carpet. The number of schools not fully opening is getting larger by the day

@Cookiecrisps the point is, the DC and teachers aren't becoming very unwell so should just they self isolate, and the rest of the bubble be given the choice.

I’m not.

There has been very little mention of schools in the press and many have cases.

As track and trace doesn’t handle school bubbles then do we really know who it’s been passed onto and the consequences

I doubt this very much.

I agree and I think we need to maybe just send close contacts home rather than the whole bubble?
Agree it’s too disruptive and there seems to be no stories about multiple cases in one bubble. Always just one or a handful of cases..

Either the measures are working or young children don’t spread it as much or a combination.

I think a choice would be good. So no fines if you choose to take your child out after a positive case.

Unbelievable so screw everyone else in the school who might catch it just leave it up to the parents how much risk to put them at.
Fwiw I have a friend who works in school who is very ill at the minute.
Also another whose father is ill in hospital who is in a member of staffs support bubble.
We had a grandparent of a child in our school die.
How much research have you done into your ‘assumption’ ?

There was a lady who posted about her son being in intensive care with Covid. A 7 year old with no underlying conditions.

This is what the treatment for covid looks like. My son is 7 - no underlying medical conditions. He is autistic though, which means because he attends a specialist school, he's expected to just remain in school no matter how many times he ends up like this in hospital. The blanket approach doesn't work for my little boy who's the size of a 13 year old. Clearly. Here's the treatment the nhs gave to him with grace, understanding and support.

20l oxygen - for 5 days straight, this was gradually lowered and he managed without it finally on the 6th day (Sat's (amount of oxygen saturated in the blood dropped to 84 minus even on 20l O2 ))

Salbutomol nebulisers hourly, this was gradually reduced after the first 48 hours.

Magnesium and Potassium through a syringe driver into his foot.

2 IV drips one in each hand.

Strong antibiotics
Strong steroids

Anti nausea medicines to protect his stomach lining and to stop him feeling sick and vomiting

Chest xray
Physio

Salbutomol inhaler and treatment plan administered for at home.

We may be the small percentage but the virus is catching in case we didn't know. My sons school had a case one week (Monday) in, I took him home the next day after reading about it in the news (with more info there than the letter we got!) he was hospitalised by blue light Friday afternoon. He nearly died. He was very close to being intubated.

Schools are not safe. Simple as that. They can fine me, throw me in prison - Gavlar and this government WILL be made accountable.

I will scream untill my last breath so that no one has to go through this. I've never been so scared in my whole life. Keep them safe!

5 children and counting who have tested positive from a school bus in dd school. I would call that multiple cases.

No mainstream media seemed to notice the 26 teachers, 60 educational staff, who died of Covid in the 6 weeks up to April. In fact, it's very difficult now to get any stats by occupation isn't it? You'd almost think they didn't want you to know. www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.tes.com/news/coronavirus-revealed-least-26-teachers-have-died-covid-19%3famp

I personally know 2 teachers who are very ill with Covid right now. I think your assumption is entirely wrong.

I’m referring to primary school? School bus implies secondary. And maybe there are more incidents on buses and public transport.

But have we heard of cases spreading through entire class bubbles in primary?

@Worriedmum999
Sorry to hear about the 7 year old, obviously that's awful. But when people say school isn't safe it annoys me as it is as safe as it ever has been (or more so) for the MAJORITY of DC who are incredibly unlikely to become very ill. I do think that ecv teachers should be better supported.

RubyandBen so you have read about the Physics teacher in hospital from a local school?

Children need to be at school but please do not kid yourself it is as safe as it ever has been (or more so schools are not covid secure.

This may not be an issue for the students (who knows) but it is a huge issue for the community. If schools had more funding and help from the Government then they could be safer
