Hi I’m half Welsh but live in England on the border, in an area not currently in any lockdown.
Am I right in thinking I can’t visit family in Flintshire now but I can go to Gwynedd?
It’s so confusing keeping track of everyone’s rules.

That’s right @BrokenBrit you can’t enter or leave welsh lockdown areas except for things like work, education, medical appointments. But while Gwynedd is still not locked down you can go there

I gave up keep track of the rules (apart from where I live!) ages ago, it’s too confusing and there isn’t room in my head for all that conflicting nonsensical “do but don’t”

I’m so glad you started a new thread OP, thank you! I’m in Gwynedd and am
Hoping the WG acknowledge that the rise is largely uni based and (I don’t think?) community transmission yet. Selfishly, my mum and my brother are meant to come up and visit the weekend 23rd and my mum has only seen DS once this year.

At the same time, a local lockdown wouldn’t really have much impact on us as a family as we don’t really socialise indoors. Lockdown on Anglesey from November on wards would really bugger me up though as I couldn’t work (tourism) and no furlough.

It’s all a bit shit atm isn’t it? I wouldn’t mind a short sharp circuit breaker lockdown with a definite end date, two weeks maybe, with the view to push figures down a bit before Christmas. I wouldn’t support a rolling national lockdown like before though.

I wonder if next year might see a series of planned circuit breakers, almost like enforced long weekends?

Aloha I watched mark Drakeford’s q&a the day and he specifically mentioned that almost all the Gwynedd cases were from the university which was why they hadn’t put measures in place for the county as a whole yet. I hope it stays that way for you!

If you look at PHW statistics, then you will see residents outside Wales included at the bottom, those include the students that have tested positive for covid.

I am in Cardiff. Do we know how long restrictions are likely to last for? I assume the rise in cases is partly University based. There are a few big ones here.

I’m in Caerphilly. The rules seem mad to me. I can’t go to a McDonalds less than 2 miles from my home without being fined, yet I can travel almost 20 miles in the opposite direction! How does that make sense?

We were the first in lockdown, and was looking like we’d be out soon, but cases are rising again :(

Don’t think it can be linked to universities, as there are no big universities in Caerphilly.

I think we are going to end up in lockdown for months the way cases are going.

We don't know how long they will last in Cardiff (or anywhere) but I suspect we're very much in for the long haul, so months rather than weeks. I'm in Cardiff.

Eve I don't disagree with you. My parents are being very careful and don't do much other than walks outside etc. They have a holiday property in Pembs where they would just stay there and go for walks etc. Yet they can't travel there because we are in a local lockdown! I fully understand rules which mitigate risk but there is NO risk for some things that would be breaking the rules.

@justasking111 thanks for clarifying that, I had been wondering what that figure related to. So is that people who test positive whilst in Wales but whose usual residence is elsewhere?

I live near Wrexham. Some of DC extra curricular activities have had to stop, as they were in Shropshire. We're just sticking with going outdoors for walks/ bike rides, shops, work and school. Decided to keep distance with grandparents to keep them safe. Managing okay so far. I'm not sure on the science for these rules.

This is where I struggle with the whole thing. The lock downs don't seem to be having much impact as they are but the government doesn't appear to have any kind of plan, they just lurch from one idea to another. Meanwhile the likes of Germany and Italy are keeping their numbers low at present.

I’m from Flintshire but live in England now. I’d like to know where the transmission is happening in Flintshire as no unis there that I am aware of.

I notice there is now an exemption for cross border travel for “kids sport” which is helpful.

But yeah can’t see my parents indefinitely which is pretty shit.

I’m in Monmouthshire. The Newport county line is about 1 mile up the road from me so can’t go any further than that but can driver over the bridge to Bristol!
Apart from Abergavenny the rest of Monmouthshire is fairly low so hoping that we stay out of lockdown.

I'll join! Finding local lockdown very hard atm, it feels hard to bear as myself and family have been very sensible I know it's like this for many though. Just read on the BBC news that travel writer Simon Calder got a fair bit of abuse after encouraging people to come to Wales and has now vowed not to come to Wales again!! Talk about throwing a tantrum...

I'm caerphilly too. I'm finding it annoying about the lack of shops in caerphilly. I don't want to do all my Christmas shopping online.

I read recently that the residents outside Wales cases (which have bee really high last few weeks) are students who are registered at home in wales but studying outside wales and been tested there.eg at uni in Manchester but I don't understand why it would be counted like that!

@BrieandChilli how do you know most of the cases in monmouthshire are in Abergavenny? Is there a map somewhere?

Yes although I can’t remember where I saw it, I’ll have a look later and see if I can find it again. Also on the wales online list of schools with confirmed cases the only school in Monmouthshire was in Abergavenny.
