I live in Sussex (no local restrictions). DD is at Leicester University (local restrictions) and my neice lives near Bolton (local restrictions).

I'm supposed to be meeting them for the weekend in Manchester (local restrictions) in November and we have a hotel room booked. We could keep 1m apart.

I can't work out if we would be breaking any rules. I can't find anything about hotels.

Thank you.

I live in a restricted area .... from what I understand, the rules apply to people from a restricted area no matter where they meet. So you could meet other friends from your area.... but there are restrictions applied to those in Manchester etc which means they can't meet you . Sorry, it's a shit situation x

I am not certain enough of the restrictions to know if your plans break them so will let someone else answer that. What I do know is that your need to be 2m from each other unless there are mitigations such as you are wearing masks, you are outside or you are side by side rather than face to face. 1m apart indoors and maskless if you are face to face is too close.

My understanding is that neither of your friends would be able to travel if it was for an unnecessary event or reason.

I dont think there's an issue with you going but I'm not sure why anyone would want to go to an area that has 10x the average number of cases ...

I am in Manchester. You cannot meet anyone outside of your household. You cannot share a hotel room.

I'm sorry that you can't meet them, but it is for good reason. The only people I see either live in my house (partner and kids) or the kids I teach. Even shopping is delivered.

Greater Manchester here. You can all travel there but cannot meet indoors together as you are not from the same household. And given that the rate in Manchester is skyrocketing and we’ve been in restrictions for what now feels like forever I’m sure it won’t help the situation - more mixing from other parts of the country/area...I’d like to get out soon thanks!

If you're single or a single parent you can have a "support bubble" with one other household, but you can't swap and change it

Officially no. I have seen my dd though, I don't think it's fair 18 year olds are expected not to see their parents (but 17 is fine)

I’m really interested in this too. I’m south, parents are in a northern lockdown area. They don’t go out much so not concerned as much about spread, but they were due to come and stay in late October and would now be against the rules. Could we/you book two hotel rooms or cottages and just meet outside?

I'm in Nottingham and a bit confused. The advice is:

we may find we are returning to that situation where we are in bubbles and we're asking people not to mix in their households.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-nottinghamshire-54420187

So we can't mix households, but can we still meet the people who are in our 'bubble'?

NotTerfNorCis · 06/10/2020 11:37

Okay so according to the BBC:

Single adults living alone - or single parents whose children are under 18 - can now form a support bubble with one other household.

The second household can be of any size and can now include "at risk" people who were shielding.

But the rules change when there are local restrictions and households are not supposed to mix.

I’m in Greater Manchester, you can legally meet with people outside of your household in pubs, restaurants etc but the govt “advice” is not to. The advice is often touted as if it is the law, but it is not.

So I think you’re fine for your trip, as long as you don’t mind coming to an area with high rates (although presumably you won’t be in student bars...)

I'm in Manchester. If you look on the gov.uk site you can find the details. So long as you're not meeting in a private house or garden, I think you're not breaking the law, just going against guidance which advises not to meet people from other households in a public venue (I would assume this means hotels too). The rule of six is still law too, but assume you'll be less than six anyway.

For the Manchester local restrictions the law says:

If you live in one of the affected areas, in order to help prevent the spread of coronavirus you must not:

host people you do not live with in your home or garden, unless they’re in your support or childcare bubble

meet people you do not live with in their home or garden, whether inside or outside the affected local areas, unless they’re in your support or childcare bubble

The Manchester local restrictions guidance (not law) says:

In the affected local areas, we also advise that you should not:

meet with people you do not live with, unless they’re in your support bubble, in any public venue. Examples of public venues include pubs, bars, restaurants and cafes places of worship, community centres, leisure and entertainment venues, or visitor attractions and parks. This also includes outdoor areas of these venues (such as a beer garden) and areas directly outside them, such as the pavement or road. Further examples include shops, places of worship, community centres, leisure and entertainment venues, or visitor attractions and parks. This applies to visiting venues inside and outside of the affected areas
visit friends or family in care homes, other than in exceptional circumstances. Care homes should restrict visits to these circumstances

I'm under this restriction

As I understand it you cannot "meet" with others in a pub or restaurant unless you social distance. If someone is from another household (unless in a single person support bubble), then the rules on social distancing still apply

So you would still have to sit at a separate table with another household in a pub for example

My advice, rather cynically, is not to worry as you will not be able to meet up by November in Manchester.

I’m sorry, I know that is no help at all.

Is it possible to change your plans to meet in a hotel somewhere else, perhaps with a lower rate of infection?

Report
notso · 06/10/2020 23:34

Looking at 'what is allowed' you can go on holiday out of an area with restrictions with your household or support bubble.
If you stay in a hotel you shouldn't share rooms and should socially distance in all indoor public areas.

BarbaraofSeville · 07/10/2020 04:02

I think that the situation you describe is advised against, but is not against the law*, which only applies to meeting in houses and private gardens.

It is therefore up to you to make the decision. Of course this is the current position and it could change at short notice between now and your trip.

  • When the guidance says 'must or must not' this means 'against the law', if it says 'should or should not' this means 'advised against'.
