I not a crier. But I feel like sobbing at the state of the world.

Not so much recently (more stressed now due to how it's affecting my loves ones) but yes I've felt like crying for humanity. It's not easy, is it?

I'm not going to lie, I'm usually pretty stoic but yesterday was a dark day

Yes. So I have a cry, then carry on. All we can do, really.

It's hell. I really don't know what to do anymore. It's my child's future that scares me. I can't sleep. I can't think. I can't cope.😢😥

It is grim and now we are into autumn many will feel even worse as the clocks go back and the nights draw in.
The last few years have been tough and just as the economy seemed to be turning a bit of a corner we now have a pandemic! Not to mention the Brexit problems .
Many people I know are really struggling to find jobs and pay bills and although the government are trying to help, many will fall through the cracks which is really sad.

The thing is although humanity has lived through similar and worse things - we now have 24/7 media exposure.
So I can’t help feeling that with Spanish flu - whilst ‘worse’ in terms of mortality - people weren’t as all consumed by it. There’s just no escaping the constant corona information.

The state of the world is always shit, I realise. Sorry. Those are not the words you want to hear. I am very cynical. I too cry. I have my days where I think, 'What a dumpster fire'. I feel angry that 'government and leadership' is a for-profit industry and we're the tired-ass cogs in the wheel being made redundant at a faster pace than I'd like to see. I think covid will perpetuate an AI world and I'm not sure that's a good thing at all. The average person's sense of purpose and joy is being stripped away by powerful groups who don't give a fuck about human welfare and happiness UNLESS they can profit from our welfare and happiness. Well, then it's bread and circuses time!

That said, life is full of glory, beauty, love, and sweetness. If you have access to the good stuff, you hang onto it. There are people born into short lives of utter shit who never hit that sweet spot in life. And that's a heartbreaker. That's just unfair. But if you have access to the goodness, tap into it often. Thrive off the love of your family and friends, go outdoors and connect with Mother Nature, listen to music as often as possible. There will likely be better times ahead. We've been around a hell of a long time, humans. We're pretty good at weathering shit storms. I just wish we'd stop manufacturing our own shit storms! That's the bit I never understand. We do it to ourselves.

My best friend is in so much debt now it's scary. She has a few businesses which have struggled lately and the money she owes is just going up and up. She tries to stay positive but it's hard and her mental health is suffering. She has so much on her plate. I feel for her so much.
I know she's one of many but it's heartbreaking. So many people are affected by this. The world is in a bad way politically and the virus has caused havoc.
This week has been bleak.

TheVanguardSix · 24/09/2020 18:13

I think too that the constant shadow of lockdown again following us us around is a total bummer. I mean, the electrifying spring and summer helped us to keep our mental health above water. But bleak winter is a different kettle of fish. We've had a short spell of respite (if you can call it that) after lockdown (here in London), and to see other parts of the country back in lockdown is just sad and depressing. It's like, how do you expect people to continue to muster that little bit of hope needed to carry on when so many are losing so much... homes and businesses they've thrown their life savings into decades ago are gone in a matter of months. A lifetime of an established reality built on dreams from long ago has been changed forever by this pandemic. It's really tough. Really sad. As mentioned above, the media bombardment does not help at all.

Yes I do, I am dreading round 2 of looking after covid patients and the whole NHS being disrupted again. We've got a massive backlog of patients and another backlog will mean people are going uncared for for months and years.
I live alone and haven't seen my family since January, my friends likewise as they don't want to catch anything from me - I've become a total recluse.
I'm one of the lucky ones, at least I have a job and my own home, the thought of all those people out of work, losing their homes makes me physically sick - the awful hardship people are going through.
The spanish flu took two years to burn out, I hope this 2nd round will be the last one but we just don't know with this virus.

Me too. I’m pregnant and due in December and having thought everything would be ok when it comes to labour and that my husband could definitely be there for the whole thing, it’s now looking less likely Sad

Big hugs (from a distance...) for everyone. It’s just shit.

You're right the world has always been shit, it's totally dog eat dog, and it's really only in the West in the last 70 years that any one has been insulated from that reality.

I also agree there is much good and beautiful in life and I am appreciating those bits all the more now. For example I savour a walk in the countryside far more than I would have done previously. I more consciously value the people in my life. It has made me realise that I used to worry about things that just did not matter. I still occasionally get caught up in that kind of thinking but nowhere near as much.

Of course I do not wish this horrible situation to continue though, and really do hope science comes to the rescue and vastly improves the situation.

Yep, the last few days have been awful. Six months with not a penny of support and absolutely no acknowledgement today either. In fact Rishi Sunak purposely ignored all questions about those left out from March. Absolutely galling to hear him say he would be supporting viable jobs as if my entire career has been totally worthless. On top of all that Hmrc apparently can’t repay me £2000 of overpaid tax due to a glitch in the system!

I am not a crier, but I wanted to wail when I had a trip into town, and to be told I couldn't sit down in the cafe because they were 'full'. I got a takeaway, and then couldn't find anywhere to sit outside - benches etc removed or taped up. It sounds like such a small thing, but it was a tipping point.

I don't think schools will shut unless it's so bad and nobody can go into work as they have to isolate and there isn't enough staff to open up. I hope they can stay open at least. (I know it's shit for teachers though. )
As long as some of the economy can limp on to to the spring then there might be a glimmer of hope for next year : we need that to keep going a bit as the nhs and schools need tax payers money.
I know the chancellor will receive criticism , but what are the alternatives really?
My dad always had savings for a rainy day but many won't even be able to do this if course.
I think we've all been a bit down this week especially as maybe people did think that things might be a bit better by now.

Yes at times but I am really trying to cut back on watching the news all the time and reading the papers online. I am a worrier and am trying to take one day at a time and try (which is hard) not to keep thinking a month ahead or 3 months or 6 months. Yesterday I had a crap day but today has been better.

I think it’ll take longer than Spanish flu to be gone because we are slowing the natural course of it down.
Unless there’s a vaccine I suppose

One day at a time is all any of us can do. Our kids and grand kids will have to pay this money back for decades and that also concerns me: the young have been screwed as it is and now this!
I know it's not in my control but it's still hard. Not to mention how society will be affected by homelessness and poverty.
No wonder people think we should try to ' live with it' and go back to normal.
I can see all sides to this health emergency.

In terms of crying for humanity, covid doesn't really affect me. It'll all be over in a year or two. The impending climate disaster, mass migration, food and water insecurity, etc. worry me a lot more. I worry for my children and future grandchildren.

Bigger than this and that is very scary.

Now the weather is turning yes. If we had a cold crisp and sunny winter ahead, I think I could just get through but a typical British winter is constant rain which really limits choices with young kids. It feels so bleak.

Yes, I’m keeping busy as much as possible but every night I fall to pieces.

Being evicted in a little less than 3 weeks (no fault of my own, rent is fully paid no arrears) don’t actually have anywhere to go yet. Been made high priority with the council as have a young child and severe mental health issues. I feel like giving up, but not an option.
