Does a face shield

Still count as a covering in supermarket/public area type situations?

I've been wearing masks but I'm really prone to angular cheilitis. Had a massive flare up since the spring (when I started wearing them) and I just can't get rid of it and am in a bit of a state.

I am limiting how often I'm in public of course but circumstances mean I can't avoid wearing them for hours a day.

Probably but there is no evidence that a face shield without a ,ask is any better than nothing to protect you or others and anecdotal reports that hairdressers wearing just a shield were more likely to get infected than with a mask.

How are you wearing them for “ hours a day “ unless you have an occupational requirement for ppe ?

Travel + work (sometimes) + general daily mask wearing activities.

Some days I can pretty much wear them all day, others not at all. None mask days I can feel an improvement.

No. Face shields offer protection on top of masks but are no substitute for masks.
