Chris Whitty to hold briefing tomorrow

According to sky news, Chris Witty is to hold a briefing tomorrow and will not be joined by any members of the cabinet or Boris Johnson and won't take questions. He will apparently discuss different scenarios.

Does that sound odd to anyone else and does this maybe mean no further restrictions this week, let's just try and scare us all into being good instead?

Won't take any questions is a strange one.
What a strange one. Negative side of me says he's resigning (hence no questions) due to him not agreeing with the Government (and can't say as such due to NDA?!)

It does say he will be joined by chief scientific advisor... seems like a really strange move!!

Maybe Boris is on strike until he gets paid more, so Chris is having to do it on his own. Would we notice that Boris is not leading the country?

Seriously though, this is a little worrying

My thinking is that surely any further restrictions wouldn't be announced by anybody other than Boris?

The PM would need to deliver that message though surely?

They’ve been telegraphing another full lockdown for over a week now.

This will be the “scientific” basis for it.

They’re wheeling him out as the harmless geek who is just telling us the facts.

It will be followed by solemn Boris about 8pm tomorrow night telling us it’s another lockdown.

That’s if wee Nicky doesn’t usurp him first.

Neither the PM nor any member of the cabinet wants to be the bearer of bad news.

I think they just said on the bbc 10 o clock news that Boris will be at the briefing too, they didn't say what time it's on though?

I thought Boris was rumoured to be making an announcement on Tuesday. Maybe this is to lay the ground for that?

Report
Piggypower · 20/09/2020 22:21

Why why why do they do this late at night?

Report

I think they just said on the BBC news it would be the triumvirate- Whitty, Valence and Johnson.

Anyone know what time?

This is extremely worrying. The scientists cannot be allowed to run the response without the involvement of economists as there is a need for the country to balance competing objectives in a way that the scientists alone wouldn't consider (as their job is simply to reduce the impacts on health).

The Guardian seems to suggest he’s just putting the hard word out, but that London are going to go into tougher restrictions very soon.

SquirrelScorn · 20/09/2020 22:22

I don’t think they’ll announce a lockdown tomorrow. It’s the medical/science people so they can deliver a serious telling off to the public and give everyone a last chance to avoid lockdown. Then the blame will be placed with the public when the inevitable lockdown happens in a couple of weeks, despite the contributory government failures.

I doubt most people will give a fuck what Whitty says.

Maybe followed by a pre recorded Boris telling us all to stay at home again. Who knows it's all a bit worrying now. I also noticed there was no time stated

Why - if it’s SO serious - wait weeks for another lockdown?

Just more contrary nonsense.

Good luck with the compliance this time!

I’m in a “locked down” council area in Scotland and not a solitary person is taking any notice of it whatsoever.
