Covid

Do we need to self isolate?

DS (10) came home from school last night complaining of a sore throat but no temperature and otherwise fine (eating, gaming etc) a few hours later his temperature was really up and he was very clearly unwell. This morning temp totally gone and looks like it's now a cold - lots of snot, taste and smell okay and eating & drinking okay. My gut feeling is he's picked up a cold from school but obviously don't want to take any chances at the moment. Also the rest of us in the house are fine.

So in the above circumstances would you be self isolating and contacting school (also my DD school)

Thanks

Temperature- yes I would, test ( if you can get one!) and isolation Flowers

Yes, unfortunately you do. A test would speed things up but goodness knows if you’ll be able to get one for him.

Would have said no, were it not for the temperature. Which changes my mind to a yes probably.

My son has a cold but none of the three main symptoms. We are not isolating. If his temp went above 38.5 then we would follow the isolation guidance.

Thanks all - sounds like we're isolating.

It’s an absolute yes, it’s very clear on all the gov and nhs information for a fever. I completely sympathise as it’s really annoying when so many kids will be coming down with basic colds, hopefully you’ll get lucky and be able to get a test quickly. Hope he feels better soon

Yes, due to the high temperature

Yes, same situation as me although we are awaiting test results. My son has all the symptoms.

I wouldn't be. He has no cough, no loss of taste or smell, the only symptom he has of covid is the temperature and that can be accounted for by the fact that he clearly has a cold. I spike ridiculously high fevers with colds and won't be isolating every time or I"d never be at work.

If temperature is normal today and no other symptoms apart from cold, then I wouldn’t bother with trying to get a test, but just stay in and see how he gets on today and tomorrow.

I would have done last week, but this week our school has said to wait 24 hours and is the temperature goes back down and it’s just a cold, then no need to test...

Yes because he had a sign-temperature.

If his only symptom of covid was a short fever then I wouldn't isolate. He has a cold.

Yes and isolate in meantime. Don’t send him back to school without a negative result. Unfair on staff and others.

I would put money on new testing guidelines coming out as there’s no way we have enough tests for testing all the winter bugs symptoms alongside covid.

Thanks all - such a pain but obvs will follow the guidelines

Same situation as you with DD(5). She had a fever, the next morning it was fine. Coughing intermittently but not what I would call persistent or continuous. I did the online symptom checker which told me to call 111 & they said I should still get her tested. Was a challenge to get one, just keep persisting/refreshing & eventually something should come up. After having the test her temp spiked back up & she started coughing even more so I think we did the right thing.

I wouldnt get him tested for a one off temp. Was it above 38? Sounds like he just has a cold.

ginberry4 glad you were able to get the test - been trying all day and can't get anything. Such a pain!

Fingers crossed negative for you. DD got an unclear result so we’ve been back for a retest today

My 9 year old nephew had Covid and had a high temp for only about 24 hours. I don't think you can just assume it's a cold unfortunately.

Oh me too
So fed up and unsure

DS10
Woke up with a really bad cold. Heavy and phlegmy. Sore throat.
Not eating. No temp.

Wasn't bothered until he said food tastes tastes funny.

Can't get a test. Should I get hold of the girl he caught it from and ask if they had been tested ?? School weren't bothered by her sneezing all week in class.

Maybe if this family did test and it was negative then I'll carry on as a cold.

I did mention on another thread but re the test we couldn't find anything on the gov website after trying all day yesterday and so this morning so DH took DS and just went to a local walk in site listed on our LA page and he was tested straight away and results should be in tomorrow.
