Loving families and friends impacted

Supposedly to make things simpler, it seems to me so many people will be deeply sadly impacted “the 6 rule” with little effect.

Effective would be to

  • close indoor pubs
  • close indoor restaurants
  • masks compulsory
  • WFH if you can
  • Secondary school Live online except for vulnerable, those without tech (teachers/pupils)

We have six children, two of whom are adults and live away from home so we cannot gather as a family unit under these rules (I think?!)

No that’s correct.
You can’t gather legally

And what happens to those who own/work in pubs and restaurants?

My daughter has had no school for 6 months - please don’t close schools. I work in one as support staff too.

It will be a quieter Christmas for a lot of people

@Lily2020 Thanks Lily, I'm going to hope things change before then too!

Across the board it will be swings and roundabouts though.

For me, as a singleton, it means I can meet up with five friends from separate households and go to a restaurant legally. Before this, I could only meet up with one friend at a time indoors.

While I think the measures are extreme and not likely to be as effective as the Government wants the public to believe, I think the 'what about Christmas' posters are missing the point. Firstly it's 3 months away, so the restrictions may have been lifted by then, and secondly, surely whole families gathering together in houses in the middle of Winter (peak illness season) is fast way to ensure increased cases, especially when children return to school in the new year.

Report
PurpleDaisies · 09/09/2020 18:27

What makes you think the measures will have little effect? It will limit the opportunity for transmission of the virus.

As pants as it is, contact with our loved ones doesn't keep people in jobs, doesn't keep businesses moving which in turn funds the nhs and schools etc. We need the economy to be moving.

I think a mum is allowed to make one statement that she might miss seeing all her children together at Christmas, no?

Ahh for the halcyon days when one could express a sorrow without some bugger berating you for it...

It's not the pubs and restaurants that are the problem. It's close knit family/ groups of friends gathering in small enclosed places eg someone's house.

Yet as a family of 4, to interract with another family of 4 is illegal. Whatever happened to the right to a family life?

I suppose we could take turns to leave a spare child at home? (Joking)

More sensibly it should be household based. Adding in a couple of children between 6 or 8 makes no difference to risk.
Once again family needs are overlooked.

There is also a lack of clarification on non-,sporting organisations just as many are starting up for a new term.

At Bog roll I think the previous posters point was that the restrictions have affected different groups disproportionately at different times.

So during lockdown single people and single parents weren’t able to see another adult for many weeks.

It doesn’t mean of course there can be sympathy for the groups that are now disproportionally affected. There is nothing good about any of the restrictions and impact of the pandemic.

Jagoda · 09/09/2020 18:44

Thanks @BighouseLittlemouse that is what I meant.

It's hopefully not a competition Sad

I don't think a "Right to Family Life" is less or more important than my rights to socialise as a singleton, but I would like to think my needs were considered equal.

It will all be a huge fuck up as usual anyway.......

As a larger family we now can't see anyone else at all Sad I understand why though but do feel sad

Are you really advocating secondary school children sacrifice even more of their education ? Remote learning is not as effective, have we learnt nothing this year.
No way should a child screw over their future for the sake of get togethers!!!

That’s very difficult to police in public social situation though. Much easier to just look at the total number of people.

Exactly. The guideline was always six, it’s just changed to law now. Those that were complying with guidelines will see no change. It’s those that weren’t it will impact, obviously some will carry on regardless.

Id agree with the rest though OP especially schools. Let as may work remotely as possible and then vulnerable staff can wfh and be more protected.

The guidelines were 6 OR 2 households so our walk with another family of 4 was tktally acceptable at the weekend but will not be from Monday. Some people who have been following the guidelines very strictly will see changes. Not saying it won't be for the greater good etc but the reduction to 6 from 3 households is a small bit significant blow

Muslims couldn't gather as a family during Eid, why should Christmas be any different?

Report
movingonup20 · 09/09/2020 18:59

@mintpeonies

Not all secondary aged kids have computer access, not all have homes where they have space and quiet to work, pubs and restaurants are employers, many of us don't have big families so going to the pub on a Friday is our social life, masks - well it seems around 50% of people just refuse here, youngsters are the worst but older people aren't much better and they sit right next to random people (me) on the bus when it's half empty!
