Does anyone else think that Michelle Obama would make an excellent president?

She’d be amazing.

(Thought this thread was going to say Trump had coronavirus) <disappointed>

giletrouge Wed 19-Aug-20 07:12:53

Well, no, because she's always been really clear that she's not interested in being a politician, and no-one can do a job well if they don't want to do it, or not such an involved job. I mean you can clean a loo well if you don't want to, but be US president, no.

Pixxie7 Wed 19-Aug-20 07:20:35

That is probably why she would be so good, she’s not power hungry.

I like her to much to wish being the American President upon her.

IamTomHanks Wed 19-Aug-20 07:34:21

No. Her only experience is as the First Lady, and we've been living first hand what happens when someone with no experience is President.

Is she an inspiring, intelligent, bad ass lady. Absolutely. But I don't think she'd make a good President, especially since she openly says she hates politics.

Pixxie7 Wed 19-Aug-20 07:38:32

If you look at some of the presidents over .the years a lot of them haven’t had as much experience as her.

No, I don’t think she would at all. I think it is easy to grasp at straws when the alternatives are so appalling though.

ilovemydogandMrObama Wed 19-Aug-20 07:51:02

No, she is great, but there are so many amazing intelligent, articulate Americans that I am perplexed as to why the choices are Joe Biden and Donald Trump.

Will vote for Joe Biden but it's infuriating that this is the best America can do angry

giletrouge Wed 19-Aug-20 07:57:27

Frankly it's time we all took politics more seriously than thinking - oh, she inspires me, let's see if she can run a fucking country.
It's a massive job and the person who gets to do it should have been long trained for it - in a way I suspect we haven't even begun to devise yet. But certainly not because they can open their mouths and say all the right things - it's not enough. And I love Michelle Obama.

giletrouge Wed 19-Aug-20 07:58:22

I'm just hoping Biden will lead to Kamala Harris. Then we're talking.

lifesalongsong Wed 19-Aug-20 07:59:39

Am I the only one disappointed that this isn't an announcement that DT has the virus

giletrouge Wed 19-Aug-20 08:01:35

Massively disappointed Trump is not dying of coronavirus, or anything else, who cares how he goes, just get him gone America!

Click bait

He's obviously not the best that America can do, and I think, just as Michelle Obama said in her speech, he would agree with that. He's even said he's a transitionary President making way for the younger, more liberal, future of the party.

I think the Democrats faced a very difficult choice this election, and they needed to go with someone who wouldn't scare the Boomers and might sway some moderate conservatives. They couldn't go with a Hilary this time round.

End of the day, he actually gives a shit about the American People and the Office of President and he is willing to listen to science and others.

A massive improvement in my books.

If you look at some of the presidents over .the years a lot of them haven’t had as much experience as her.

Which ones? All of them except the current one have held high-ranking military positions or have been in politics. The closest she got to that was working for Chicago city council. So which presidents would you say have less experience than her? I’m curios. And what kind of experience are you talking about?

I don’t think she’d make a good president. She doesn’t even want to be president. She wouldn’t make a terrible one either, but to say she’s had more experience than others is strange.

I find MO nice but not inspiring.
I am working out that .05% of US popn has died from COVID, which probably means that about 0.1% have been quite ill with it - or 1/1000.
But the trajectory USA are on suggests that 1/100 will have been severely ill with it by start November.
So most American residents will know at least one person, have a personal relationship with them, by early November, who was quite ill (hospitalised for it). And there could be no Let Up in sight.

I wonder if that situation will make a lot of swing voters furious at Trump.

The picture that Trump has painted of Covid 19 is that it's been everyone else's fault, from Obama to the Chinese totally missing the point that he has undermined the CDC, not just recently where he has instructed hospitals not to report Covid deaths to the CDC but directly to the Trump administration shock, so there is a huge issue about the reliability of the stats.

A great book about Trump and his incompetency - Fifth Risk by Michael Lewis, which goes some way in explaining why some government departments are in disarray.

I think Michelle Obama is amazing, I’m really inspired by her, but yes as she openly says she’s not interested in politics, I think not running is the right thing.

I also think Joe Biden is the right choice, for RIGHT now. As mentioned earlier, he’s a transitional president. I really hope Kamala Harris being VP leads on to better things and that’s my hope.

As it happens, I watched Jill Biden’s speech this morning, and I really like her. Honestly the difference between her and Melania Trump couldn’t be more stark

I think Jill Biden will be a wonderful First Lady

donquixotedelamancha Wed 19-Aug-20 10:30:04

Her only experience is as the First Lady

She's been a lawyer, she's got government experience at a city level, she's been a director of big companies a university dean and run a charity.

I agree with PP's that this should still make her underqualified to be President, but she's capable and high achieving in her own right- not just a first lady.

Waytoomuch82 Wed 19-Aug-20 10:38:51

Me

Her autobiography - sensational

I meant in terms of political office. I have no doubt she's an accomplished and capable woman. But she's not a politician.

I find it utterly astonishing that 40-45% of the population continue to give Trump positive approval ratings. Even if you were prepared to vote for him because you were concerned about Biden supporting more liberal policies that you thought would be bad for the USA, how can any sane person look upon Trump positively.

annabel85 Wed 19-Aug-20 12:39:29

Is it any different from the appalling Boris led Tory government consistently polling around the same?
