Just spoken to a friend who does facial treatments and she told me that all of these business are folding and asking for food for their children as well as now suffering depression/anxiety /panic attacks .. is it really all worth it for this infection ? I think there will be more deaths from the lockdown etc

A friend of mine who is a hairdresser/beautician caught covid19, probably at work, and ended up in ICU.

Lockdown restrictions are for a reason

Not this again...

Suppose we weren't locked down and coronavirus was running rampant instead. I'm sure your friend would have a long line of customers who were willing to risk being infected in order to get their facial. And that's assuming that her customers could still afford it, of course - because other businesses would still be going bust due people choosing to keep themselves safe rather than continue as normal, a steady stream of employees off sick, etc. It's the virus that has caused the economic impacts - not lockdown.

Although I get what you are saying there has been over 46,000 deaths from Covid so far in the UK.

I think it's a no win situation, if they didn't do lockdown and millions died and we ran out of ventilators and had dead bodies it would have obviously been awful but the effect on the economy has also been bad. The government had to make choices quick and the footage coming from Italy was horrifying.

ITs a bit of an exaggeration to say all these businesses are folding. Looking at local FB pages many are ready to go as soon as they are allowed

Lots of people are being made redundant it’s not just small businesses closing, and it’s not just in this country, it’s across the world

But are you really saying it’s better to have hundreds of thousands of deaths!

This virus is serious, the economic fall out is serious.

Unfortunately those doing e.g. facial treatments will be at the highest risk from rising cases so we need to find a way to help them financially without risking more spread.

Unfortunately people who do their jobs in such close proximity to their client's faces are going to be the last to go back to work. You don't even have to give it moments thought to realise how dangerous it would be for everyone involved.

I feel very sorry for them, but what can you do.

This. I'm desperate to get my eyebrows done. But I'm not going to. Someone that close to my face, who has been that close to many other peoples faces is really high risk. I'm in a area of local lockdown our community transmission rates are through the roof. And you can see why - people are not socially distancing, mask wearing appears to be optional and people are not paying attention to the local lockdown.

Buut many of my friends have cancelled hair appointments, stopped going to the gym since it reopened, cancelled plans because the transmission rate is so high. They aren't idiots - they realise their risk is low, but they would prefer not to pass it on to more vulnerable members of their families, not have their kids ill, not have their kids pass it on to friends with vulnerable family members.

And I'd really rather not have it again, I was really really ill with it and never ever want to get it again!

What do you suggest happens then OP? What should the government do? If they allowed all businesses to including the high risk ones like the beauticians and hundreds and thousands more people die would that improve the mental health of the nation with more people bereaved?

Report
DebLou47 · 03/08/2020 14:42

I actually think these places are far more hygienic than other business they have ppe and shield and a lot work from behind !!! Do you suffer mental health because I do and ALOT of young people are suffering .. this disease kills mainly over 70's and my parents are over 70 so I am petrified for them but as it has been said there will be more than 200.000 extra deaths after lockdown due to suicides /cancer treatment /people so shit scared to leave their house that they don't seek treatment

I think they should have locked down in march defo but I think business should open up now I mean there is no SD at pubs and yet these places can't open with more than full ppe

I get it, it's rubbish but it's the fault of Covid 19 and no one else. When doing brows and other facial stuff the beautician needs to get up close and masks and shields are not going to be 100% effective in stopping the spread. My sister ended her own life so I am more than aware of the affects of mental ill health.

How do you propose the government balance keeping people safe from Covid 19 and preserving people's mental health? I have tried to think myself over the months but I can't think of an effective way.

It amuses me that you casually talk about how saving people from painful, premature deaths isn't worthwhile, but think "not this again" is a harsh comment Grin

There should be. And it should be policed- in our area some have been closed due to no SD.

Do not use people not following the rules as reason to open up another service.

Could your friend try and make some money thinking out of the box until they can do facials in person again?

Like create boxes of products and link to a YouTube video for people to facial at home? Perhaps do a farmer's market stall? Advertise via a local Facebook group or clientele list?

"Look Boom for Zoom" perhaps.

I am not being flippant just trying to offer some ideas to adapt at the moment as I can't see social distancing going away anytime soon.

Might keep the vultures from the door.

Just been to local Indoor trampoline park. 3 kids there- more staff in the building. They said they are in serious trouble and will have to fold very shortly. They wish they’re stayed closed until furlough was over.
It’s a pretty big chain too.

everything is all covid and every else forgotten I mean people's cancer treatments etc

Is this really true? It's repeated often but is there evidence? I can see maybe for a month or two during the peak in cases, but I don't know anyone who has lost out on cancer treatment or had it delayed more than a couple of weeks. I know several cancer nurses who have worked in cancer care throughout. I was referred for tests within 2 weeks and seen very quickly (one week from contact with a nurse) in a 'clean' hospital (i.e. all patients had to have negative covid tests before attending).

As to the broader point, yes, life has changed for the worse due to covid. Yes, there is a lot about it in the media because of the disruption it's causing. I don't think leaving everything open would have been better - the death toll would have been enormous and neither hospitals or funeral services would have coped, and I think yes, this would have been worse than lockdown. Look at what is happening in Brazil - mass graves.

I think targeted help for those most affected would be good now, but there's no getting away from the fact that a global pandemic is pretty awful for everyone.

I know one person who has had ongoing cancer treatment during lock down, although they have now sadly died of that cancer.

My husband has had his usual routine cancer checks.

My mum has had a cancerous growth removed from her neck.

People are being treated for things other than covid19, op.

It would also be criminally irresponsible to allow close face to face businesses to open. Having seen what Boris has done during this pandemic, don't you think he would open them up if he could get away with it? Even Boris knows the risks that beauty treatments like this cause.

That's the thing. Even when things stay open, or re open, people don't necessarily want to go. I won't be taking my kids to soft play when they reopen. They are total germ factories at the best of time, let alone now. And social distancing will be impossible in them.

Oh and my daughter lost her job in retail at the start of the lock down. She has two small children to support on her own. Realistically she can't start job hunting until the summer holidays are over (due to childcare) and I imagine it's going to be an uphill battle to get another job.

Lots of people are suffering, but we just have to try to get through this and out the other side. I just want us to hang on long enough to get better treatments and hopefully a vaccine. That's what's getting me through this weirdness.
