What a joke, hair dressers but not salons? 🤦🏻‍♀️

Seems ridiculous doesn't it? A beautician is further away from your face waxing your legs or providing a back massage, than cutting your hair. My salon had already called me and re-booked me an appointment for 4th July that had been cancelled, I'm guessing that won't be happening now.

But not for lip, lash & brow treatments or facials.

I suspect hair cuts have been deemed closer to being “essential” than beauty treatments. Which seems fair enough really.

I think also beauty salons are face to face for a prolonged period as opposed to hair dressers standing behind you

@ArriettyJones No, not really my poor sister is living of £20 A WEEK after her bills go out of her UC... she has spent money ready to go back to work, they have things in place everyone had to wear a mask so meaning no treatments for that are , screens up for nail stations etc and now she is left waiting and wondering again... she is devastated and so am I, self employed people left to it again...

Ah sorry. I am self employed and up the creek a bit (a lot) too, so I sympathise with that aspect. It’s really tough. Can your DSis get the SEISS help?

I’d also quite like to get a facial. I’m just saying I do think there’s a difference between hair and beauty services, risk wise. I wonder what the scientific advice behind the scenes is though, and I think the government have handled if all really badly. No advance warning at all.

A mask could be worn for lash and brow treatments though.

I was just saying to DH that my brow appointment is a bit like being at the dentist with the set up! Would have been quite happy to go if my lady was wearing mask and visor and I was wearing a mask. Really gutted for everyone in the beauty industry 😢

I feel for your sister as im a self employed beauty therapist. I was all set up ready to go on the 4th aswell. My partner is also self employed and has been able to work through out lockdown so money wise we ok. I just dont understand it myself to be honest. Im just hoping at the next review in few weeks time? We will be allowed to open for everyone's sake.

I can't believe that going to a pub where people will have a drink and forget social distancing is safer than having a pedicure! I'm heavily pregnant so sorting my feet out is going to be very difficult by myself. I'm useless with polish when I'm not pregnant!
The useless government can't possibly look us in the eye and say they are following the science now!

I realise this may sound selfish but I'm gutted. I usually have acrylic nails and an eyebrow wax every two weeks. I'm on my ladies waiting list and was really hoping beauty workers would be allowed to reopen from the 4th, obviously with appropriate protection.
Personally I'd feel much safer in a room with my nail technician than I would in a pub or restaurant or in a busy shop.

I'm a massage therapist and gutted. I run a clinic and my osteopath and acupuncturist can work but not me.

I had my nail appointment all booked too ☹️ seems stupid

@THNG5 It is a complete joke at this point, there is no science behind this...

So gutted for her and all the other beauty workers 😞

When is this due to be reviewed?

To be honest I don’t mind, I think we’re returning to normal at a decent pace, it shouldn’t be that much longer to wait for them to be allowed to open

Well, I suppose people may really need their hair cut, particularly if it is now in their eyes which may even occasionally compromise safety (extreme but possible if you're a surgeon, machine toolist, driver) but nobody needs their nails painted or their legs waxed. Obviously this is gutting for people who work in the beauty industry, though - as opening is essential for them.

This might be nonsense, but I wonder if beauty treatments like waxing and plucking, are considered riskier because the therapist is touching/near to your skin (although I know in theory they could have gloves and PPE on). And/or because the skin itself is broken, or 'agitated', in some way?

Report
flamingochill · 23/06/2020 16:17

I wonder if we had a female PM she would have considered some beauty treatments as important as haircuts and find workarounds like visors etc? People need to be groomed for work but I guess from a man's POV that means a visit to the barber (unless you're Johnson)

Report
Neverendingweeds · 23/06/2020 16:20

It doesn't make sense, if they are wearing PPE then why can't salons open?!

I have got a haircut and brow wax booked in with my salon, so looks like the brow wax will get cancelled which is ridiculous!

There are just so many self employed beauticians. It's such a shame. I'd also wager that a cut and colour that's been neglected for months would take a lot longer to do than a brow wax. I don't think it's got a lot to do with science at this point either.

I've just watched an Instagrammer having a facial, in America, the therapist wore a mask and gloves , ok gloves during a facial might not feel the same , but it all looked very sensible to me

I was looking forward to a nice back rub. I will have to keep massaging my pressure points myself (lower back and hips). Also need a hopi sesh as keep getting hayfever plus cant hear well in the right ear.
