Reported that this is a more virulent strain of Covid and strict local lockdowns have been instigated. 5000 sent to quarantine hospitals.

How many political dissidents will be left when this is all over?

There’s been 79 new cases.. I’m not sure we can call this a huge spike.. they are just being extremely cautious. And rightly so I suppose!

I know 87 is minuscule in comparison to our daily cases in the 1000s, but that’s precisely the reason why these countries are doing so well at suppressing the virus. They have experience with SARS, they understand exponential growth and a long incubation period. 87 cases is only the number who were infected two weeks ago.

Same goes for South Korea, which took a cluster of 50 new cases very seriously indeed a few weeks ago.?Western nations by and large are still foundering in their response. By the time the case numbers start to appear large and significant, the horse has truly bolted.

Sorry for saying 87 rather than 77!

The thing is cases from here have seeded to other areas of China. Who knows how many cases are there in reality, as several local officials have been reprimanded again. There is a political angle though, as the Chinese are saying this particular more virulent strain came from Europe.

@red Yes the health authorities and gov't in England seemed to think it was some sort of gastro 'wash you hands' when it was sars-like novel which Taiwan etc knows all about. So myopic not to go seek advice from those who knew about it. It's not as if it was new. It is just we have something like x1000000 more travel with China now compared with 2003.

And they'll have to punish us for that, won't they?

They never forgot that whole opium wars business, and they really aren't fans of the British at the moment. Threats have been made, Dominic Raab is very cagey about the whole thing, but effectively they made some similar threats against Australia recently and are presently carrying these out.

A new virulent strain from Europe 🤔
Sounds like propaganda from China's surveillance dictatorship

We are quarantining everyone, yes. But on trust & threat of fines.

How can they know it’s a worse strain? Surely it’s too soon to tell? The 77 people haven’t dropped dead so what’s worse about it? The current one seems pretty contagious!

Oh wait, I misunderstand! The Chinese are saying the strain they’ve now found is from Europe & worse than theirs.. rightttt. Seems legit.

I think the British quarantine is laughable. Many tourists coming in are not even aware of it. There's no checks or controls. It's another example of the government pretending to do something, in the belief the cast majority of gullible people will believe them.

Yeah, exactly.

If you keep a good sense of humour about it, it's actually top comedy.

Of course the British aren't Beijing's favourite at the moment.

Don't we also have "made the Chinese pay" news and posts everywhere online and all these anti-east Asian public insults? Countries should stop blaming each other.
