Doesn’t anyone care?

I’m writing this post through shock.

Over 40,000 people have died in our little country. 40,000 lives taken early. And no one cares. I’ve barely seen that figure mentioned in any of these threads, no mention of them or the hundreds of thousands of people who’s lives will be affected forever through losing them. Yet I know many people are reading this even now and saying ‘oh for god sake’ or ‘life goes on get over it’. Yes, life does go on, for us but not for them. And not for the thousands more who are going to die in the next wave because of the selfish ones who simply can’t stand to give up the life that they’re used to for a short while to fight this thing.

The government have been slow, and in being slow they’ve killed tens of thousands of people, they are trying not to take anymore risks... they’re now literally begging people to wear a mask and keep a few feet away for fuck sake and people can’t even manage that without kicking off, one comment ‘I just don’t like the feel of them on my face’ ... seriously?! Before you all think I must not understand or must not be struggling I’ve got two school age kids and we’ve taken a 50% pay cut whilst we juggle 3 jobs between us and homeschooling. By god I get the struggle. But I wouldn’t for a second put my struggle above someone’s life. There are NO excuses.

You know the figures, you’ve heard how dangerous this disease is, it’s not like flu, it’s a killer which leaves most who are lucky enough to recover with potentially long term problems. You know it’s highly contagious and you know that at least 30,000 a week are still being infected in your country. You know we are the second hardest hit country in the world (out of almost 200 countries?!). I’ve led what I consider a privileged life by living in the uk but I’m not letting that go to my head. People are acting like spoilt brats. If we went to war right now with the attitudes most people have we would be utterly fucked.

I’m not following this thread or reading the comments as everyone’s pissing me off too much, but christ I needed a vent... this country needs to get a fucking grip.

Well, no point in responding really then, is there? Thanks for pointing this out I honestly had no idea. I’ll get on to worrying about it immediately.

I find it difficult to care when those who implore me to are hyperbolic about it. It isn’t a deadly killer and it doesn’t leave most of those who recover with long term problems. That doesn’t mean we should be complacent, but the sheer uninformed hysteria from some people is really what makes many others switch off and stop caring.

48% died in care homes, people die every day, 10,000 a week, without Covid, no one before now wanted to be constantly reminded of death figures. I do know someone has died of Covid, it’s awful but staying at home worrying about dying is not living.

Have you actually been on mumsnet recently? Because seems to me all of these things are discussed all the timeHmm

  1. There’s a difference between caring and being hysterical about something. It’s incredibly sad, but I think my children are best served by me not sitting in a corner wailing and tearing my clothes while declaring the end of civilisation. Obviously for those immediately bereaved it will be different, and they’re welcome to do that if it helps them.

  1. It does not leave “most” people with long term health problems- a large proportion are completely asymptomatic. Enough people are left with long term issues that it’s sensible to try to minimise spread, but all viruses can leave long term health problems in rare cases and all can be “killers”.

They really aren’t. Masks are for situations where social distancing is hard. The government and scientists have acknowledged the evidence is pretty weak.

Have you got a source for this?

To the best of my knowledge, "potentially long term problems" have only been found in a small minority of those who have had the disease. And the vast majority of those who get Covid have mild cases and make a full recovery within weeks.

You sound smug, OP, and a little bit hysterical. This is a dedicated Coronavirus board and there have been literally hundreds of threads over the past 4 months. You seriously think nobody noticed this disease until you came along OP? Maybe you're the one who needs to get a grip.

You think no one else has noticed or that everyone has noticed and doesn't care?

People have barely left their homes for two and a half months, they haven't seen their loved ones for all that time in a lot of cases. People have made huge sacrifices and all you can do is spit bile at them.

Incidentally I don't even know a single person who has caught the illness, never mind died from it. Not even a friend of a friend or the relative of a colleague or a man who lives nearby. No one. And I've still bloody made sacrifices because I've been asked to. And yet apparently it's still not good enough. Hmm

It's a good job we have people like the op pointing these things out for us or where would we be .Hmm
The deaths rates are access to everyone who has internet so I can see how many people have died and yes it's shocking but of course we care otherwise we wouldn't have lockdown since March .
Peoples jobs livelihoods are at risk because life is important. You can argue that the government did or didn't do enough but people are well aware and they are just as tired and fed up of all this as you are .

I definitely believe the numbers are exaggerated I know a few people who have lost loved ones due to other reasons but have been put down for death = corona virus I know a nurse that works in the corona ward she said it's not as bad as they make out I used to be so scared but am more relaxed about it now

I was terrified of cv and still worry but it is NOT a killer virus. These are the mortality rates from a PHE study based on antibody screening when the millions who have had it are factored in. The risk for under 65s is very close to flu. Its tragic that so many have lost their lives, and everyone does care as we havent been living under a rock as you imply! Nobody can maintain living in fear though.

Doesn’t anyone care?

Take a look at the at the normal death figures for the UK.
Take a look at the death figures for a bad flu year.
Each individual death is devastating for family and friends. Nobody is taking away from that.
But the hysteria surrounding Covid is way out of line with the threat level. The majority of people who get it recover completely and quickly, in fact the 2 people I know were better before their test results came back positive. And one of those works patient facing in the hospital.( the other his elderly mum that he lives with )
Yes deaths are awful but 40,000 isn't apocalyptic on a national scale.

Well thanks for the lecture OP, until you educated me I had no idea the disease which killed my mum was so awful...who knew???

Report
Mintjulia · 13/06/2020 14:22

Op, 80% of people who catch the virus, don’t develop covid. And 80% of those who do develop the disease don’t need hospital treatment. Leaving 4% of the population needing hospital, a fact that is well known, and the whole reason we went into lockdown.
But panicking about it won’t help. Staying apart, staying at home wherever possible, improved hygiene and social distancing are all to slow down transmission.

We all know the mortality rates, it would be impossible not to. Anxiety levels are through the roof. But we have to get on with it, work, home ed our children, manage our finances.

Of course people care but doing a headless chicken act or blaming people won’t help. There will be time for apportioning blame and learning lessons when this is over. Right now surely we have enough to deal with.

I want govt & Bank of England focussed on supporting the economy & saving people’s livelihoods.

Patently untrue, but I see your hyperbolic approach continues throughout the rest of your post.

Maybe you would be less distressed if you revised your language to align better to reality.

Everyone cares about all that has happened this year. Most people are aware of the many deaths in this country. Some older people like me, have been scared, but not hysterical at all, as some have descendants who died in the 1918 Spanish flu, the one that killed about 60 million people world wide. Also had thousands blown to pieces in two wars..

It is difficult these days, to tell people to try and stay calm, as they have never had to be locked down before, and follow so many rules, so some, just blatantly do what they wish, and think they know the answers to everything, and put the blame on everyone that they see fit to do so.

The 40,000+ is mentioned on here and in the media daily so clearly you can't read and are hard of hearing.
Thanks for the helpful update though. I did wonder why my son's school is shut and I'm WFH and can't go out for dinner with friends or see my family for a cuppa. I thought I was stuck inside for shits and giggles - such an enlightening thread!
