Covid

I know no one who’s had coronavirus and neither do my friends or family

Or any of their friends or families.
But I have 3 friends who’s businesses probably won’t survive, another who’s husband has just been made redundant, possibly more to follow, a friend who’s teen has sunk into depression. All the dc have missed out educationally and no prospect of getting back to school anytime soon. That’s just my selfish perspective. There’s loads worse off as a consequence of the impact of lockdown and the slow easing out.
Feeling so frustrated with this now. We’re all suffering and I’m not quite sure if the benefits are going to outweigh the losses long term.

Same. The financial effect has been far further reaching that the health effects.

Three of my neighbours have passed away from COVID-19. One was only in his early 50s and had no health issues at all. My best friends mother passed away, watching her funeral on a screen was awful couldn't even be there to hug my friend and her family. So yeah you are being selfish, your friends can get new jobs and children will catch up eventually if their parents help them more with school work too.

You'd be thinking differently if you did know people.

I understand you OP. I think in the long term the lock down is going to cost more lives than it saves.

Chateau would you feel that way if he’d died from any other contagious disease?

I do know two people, a woman who works in a care home and her husband. I don't know anyone who's caught it in the community.

However, there do seem to be a high number of footballers and other celebrities who've tested positive. Why is that?

We had it. My dad (then my mum) first then me. My dh got it off me and he was very poorly.
A family in my town, I know the daughters the mum and dad got it. Unfortunately the dad died.
I'm self employed and my business is doing ok with help from the gov. Though we'll have to tighten our belts a bit as I won't be back to work fully until September.
My children are both happy enough with school work at home. 15yo kinda wants to get back to school (and I'm hoping they do cos they've got GCSEs next year) but primary child is happy working all day most days at home.

I know 3 people who've had it. None of then are over it yet, it'sbot like flu. One was so bad he was in intensive care for a long time.

Another is a 59 year old woman, and another a woman in her mid 40s. Both were very ill near the beginning if lockdown and still haven't fully recovered.

If we hadn't had lockdown, you'd know people who'd had it, be thankful to lockdown that thos is the case. It may have saved the life of people you care about.

To add, although I haven't lost anyone, I know someone who has.

From the stats four people in our local area have died, and four in the neighbouring area. I personally know of 2 (one locally, one not). Now I quite understand that it would have been much worse if we hadn't locked down, but all those poor children being kept from their friends, those poor people who will lose their jobs, the abused, those who will die of other neglected conditions. My student DS has become a nocturnal hermit. I hate it & worry about the long term effect of 6 months spent in his bedroom. I'm not saying I have an answer though.

@WowLucky I would imagine that it's proportional. There will prob be a similar number in the community and they're unaware. I don't think the virus is as scary for the majority of people as the media would have us believe

I think maybe, especially in the early days people tended to keep quiet and play it down, so you wouldn't know unless you were very close to them and of course most people who may have had it never had a test.

My friend who caught it in the care home is usually very active on social media but she didn't post anything about this. She's very sociable and lots of people "know" her but I bet most don't know she had CV.

Isn’t that the point of the lockdown though? That we have been protected from knowing too many people personally who have had it?

Lucky you.

I'm so pleased that you don't know anyone who has had it. However, 292,950 people in the UK have had it confirmed plus 41,481 confirmed deaths. There are many more that weren't confirmed.
You can't compare it to other viruses as we are still learning about this one and have no vaccine or cure.
I do know people who have had it.
Do you think it isn't real? Do you think those 41 thousand people weren't real?

ajehsnf · 13/06/2020 09:26

The reason you're in that lucky position not to know anyone who has died from it is because of lockdown. Do you think these huge numbers of excess deaths are imaginary? Think about how many more there would have been without lockdown!

I know no one who’s had coronavirus and neither do my friends or family

Our family has had it. Luckily I was very paranoid about it all and cut contact with my parents early. Children bounced back, DH fine, but 3 months on I’m still getting some weird symptoms.

Loss-benefit analysis isn’t comparing actual deaths with economic/social costs. It’s comparing to what would have happened if we hadn’t locked down.

Case 1: 40k dead, significant economic and social loss
Case 2: 100-200k dead, minor economic and social loss
Case 3: many more dead, economy continues as normal (except it doesn’t because people are scared and stay home anyway)

It is rubbish, but it’s to stop a far higher death toll. Every country in the world is doing the same (or sometimes case2 )

My husband (front line key worker) lost a member of his staff. We lost a cousin too. Neither had conditions that made them at risk and they were not in a high risk age bracket. A friend who works in a pharmacy but is a part time fitness instructor ( so much stronger heart and lungs) was laid low for weeks. There were cases in my school before closure.

My DDs lost jobs, wept over cancelled exam and fears over uni places. The ones at uni might need to commute rather than rent as the jobs they need to top up rent after our contribution probably won't exist.

But we have been well. Sad, frustrated, DH overworked but we have been well. I will watch a streamed funeral.

You can look up deaths in your local area. I don't know anyone who's had covid either, I was shocked by the map though.

I know 11 dead.

You are very fortunate not to know anyone who has had/died from it.

You'd feel differently I'm sure if you did.

Good for you. I directly know 7 people who have had it, 5 who have lost family members to it, and my mum died with it.

Since lockdown, I've lost both parents, had funerals for neither of them, and will probably lose my MIL without her having the family around her in the next month. My 14 year old will have coped with this all while being out of school for 6 months and missed out on a lot of education. And I still think lockdown is the right thing

Most of us staff (NHS hospital) caught it, many are testing positive with zero symptoms. We had very little PPE until recently. So you probably do know people have had it, they just haven’t been sick. I’ve had a number of colleagues (BAME) admired unwell to ITU and sadly 2 who I knew well died.

Having said the above, I absolutely do NOT support this continuous never ending lockdown that is having and will have far reaching consequences on finances and health.

That's interesting. There have been 5 deaths in my local area, which doesn't seem that high, the areas are small, but densely populated here.
