Labour councils preventing schools going back

So it is mostly labour run councils across the country that are preventing state school children from going back in their areas.

Within these areas most private schools are reopening and state schools are not. So much for being the party that wants to close the attainment gap. Talk about playing party politics with children’s welfare, mental health and education.

Yes, I'm furious with our council, who seem to think they know more than Public Health England about the risk of transmission - they say in their letter to parents that the government's five tests have not been met, especially with regard to test and trace, so are telling schools not to reopen - and we are not in an area of the country with higher levels. The counties either side of us have reopened their schools but my left-leaning council obviously know better. It's blatantly obvious that it's political.

They are leaving on the heads to decide. So obviously heads of private schools are more likely to return sooner as they have fee payers to keep happy. My friend’s child is returning to her few paying school with all but one of her class. My school is staying closed. My y1 child can’t return. Even if it opened half the parents aren’t sending their children back.

We have several labour run councils, R rate is 1.01, gone up from 0.7

I bloody hope they keep the schools closed. Party of putting peoples health first if you ask me.

So the R is above 1 in those areas and we have been constantly told that when it is above 1 we must observe lockdown therefore they are following government rules. It so happens they are Labour run. They are now trying to tell us that the R rate is no longer a measure by which to decide on lockdown rules but the rate of infections per 1000 people. The rules change all the time depending on what the government want. The whole Nandos type chart 1 to 5 soon went out of the window. Fucking disgraceful how it has all been handled

Is it just LA run schools that are bound by those councils’ policies? Surely academies and VA schools decide for themselves?

BadTimes No, the R is not above 1.0 in my area, but the council are still advising LA schools not to open. I'm in the Southeast.

OP Would you rather councils forced schools to open even when they'd struggle to do it safely, and to force parents to send their kids in?

Whatever the R number it doesn’t change the fact that the most wealthy and privileged will get to further their education whilst those that are not fee paying with be deprived of this opportunity. It doesn’t change the fact that most of this is happening in labour council areas.

I live in a Labour council area in the North East and until recently we had the highest deaths/R0. My dc's school (R,y1&6) isn't going back until the 15th and even then is subject to change as the principal has said that locally the rates are too high and I agree with them. If my dc were in those school years eligible to go back I wasn't going to send them. I don't want to give up their school places and HE but for our dh and I, catching it could be deadly. We have stayed at home to minimise any risk.

I understand that for most it's a mild illness and even those who are vulnerable mostly survive but I don't want to have to catch it to find out if either of us were one of the unlucky ones to end up dead.

Who said anything about forcing parents? I would just like those in state schools to have the same options available to them as those in private schools. As others above have shown it is not the R number that is the main factor in schools opening it is whether your councils is labour run or not that seems to be the main factor.

OP you said in a post earlier that fee paying schools will want the kids to go back for financial reasons. So finances are taking precedent over safety? Doesn't sound like a wise choice to me.
