Covid

Had the test but worried I didn't do it right

Myself, Hubby and DS 3 went for the test this morning at a drive through centre where we were handed the kits and asked to do the test ourselves.
Hubby did his fine, I did mine ok although I forgot to blow my nose before hand which it said to do (not sure why?)
And DS was hysterical when hubby put the swab to the back of his throat and he gagged and was crying hysterically there after. We managed to give the swan a quick swirl around his throat, but then his hand was pulling us away and he briefly touched the end of the swab.
I'm worried this affected the test, and also we weren't unable to swirl the swab around the back of his throat for 10 seconds due to him being so upset. We did the best we could.
Had anyone had the test and not been able to do it exactly how they say and still got a result back ok?

It’s tricky isn’t it! And not just for kids, pretty sure mine got my teeth and tongue a fair few times whilst trying not to gag! Result came back fine for mine.

The tests are a bit fiddly. I would think doing a self test on a 3 year old was pretty impossible to be honest.

I don't think the nose blowing for you is a problem. When DH and I were tested by a medic at a drive through I was asked to blow my nose but he wasn't. Both tests were ok and came back negative.

You might not get a result for your DS. You'll need to wait and see what comes back. You'll have to base his likely result on the results of your tests ie if you are both negative then he probably is too and visa versa.

If he's being tested to return to childcare though you'll need a test result for him. You may need to try again or isolate for the correct time before are turning to his childcare setting.

The blowing your nose is important because you are supposed to be stabbing the sinus cavity not the nostril.

It's pretty hard to do the test successfully on yourself and nigh on impossible to do on a 3 year old so dont beat yourself up. Even w people being treated for COVID in hospital the number of negative swabs is around 30%
