Covid

Gyms and studios not opening

Tara200 · 26/05/2020 17:49

I am a “fitness professional “
( as in its my job and livelihood )

To me it makes zero sense we plan to open shops and beauty salons around July 4th but not gyms and studios

Could we not just Set clear guidelines , no over 60s or those with underlying health conditions as Dubai , the USA and many other European countries have . Stay away if you are over 60 or have underlying health conditions . All these countries have opened their gyms and stidios with guidelines
These People should take ownership and responsibility for themselves
The WHO says 1 meter apart . Somehow the Tory government doubled that to 2 meters . . . .?

Why can’t we follow similar social distance guidelines to those for the reopening of shops and restaurants / pubs .

Some of us need to work
The owner of David Lyodd gyms has appealed to the government to show common sense
The nations mental health of its children and adults up to 60 needs to matter far more then they have shown us .

I went to the coast yesterday for a social distance dog walk with a Freind . What I saw was groups of older people clearly not living in the same household entirely floating social distance .
Unbelievably selfish

Yet our kids are denied school, parents unable to work
All teenagers I saw were bike riding 2 meters apart . Yet these selfish old sods were having a ball

I Couldn’t give a monkeys what mr Cummings did or didn’t do
It’s so irrelevant
He is a dad .i am a mum . We protect our kids first and foremost

I can’t believe its no 1 news story somebody needed child care when they were sick when our economy and our children’s futures are being so destroyed by a government sitting on the fence

It’s a hideous front by our government to refuse to take ownership and not protect the economy and mental health of the majority of the population

My daughter is training to be a professional dancer so I do understand the importance of being able to train but for me, the increased droplet spread risk of this kind of Physical exertion in an indoor studio is not worth it.

That must be v stressful for you.

It seems likely that there are some particular risks with gyms.

Your comment about people who have died of covid was really shitty.

Yep instructor here too but only in last 18 months so went self-employed at the wrong time to benefit from Chancellor's scheme so want to get back asap and UKactive's plan is really quite comprehensive on how to manage things in my opinion.

What does Dominic Cummings have to do with it? Confused

I've reported your post OP. Very offensive.

I would love the gyms to reopen. Not called chunky run for nothing

OP you seem to be conflating a lot of issues (Cummings, Brexit, schools reopening) and yours sounds more like an angry rant than the point you were initially trying to make about gyms needing to reopen.for the mental.health of everyone.

I'm in Germany
Gyms have been opened here, but only after everything else, except for indoor pools & saunas.

In my gym, showers and sauna still closed
social distancing with every other bench and all mats marked "out of use"
Hand sanitisers & warnings everywhere
Strictly limited numbers in class

Numbers are still way down on what they were before, probably because gym-goers tend to be more health-conscious than the average person

So even the much lower limits on classes are not being used up.
Some classes cancelled because the minimum 4 number not reached.

People know that outdoor exercise has v v low risk - I live by the Rhine and it's busy every day with walkers and cyclist

Jesus your attitude stinks!! Of course it's not good to be working out in close proximity indoors with others. People can just as easy work out at home or run etc so the mental health side of it is a moot point.

Your daughters career and future .?

Against old people who were going to die of natural causes anyway

Who have behaved like the most selfish generation in history
Squeezed our nhs out of every penny
Denied our children from life saving drugs and operations
Destroyed out children’s future by voting brexit secure n the know, edge they will be dead before it I Impacts them . . ..?

Is this an actual serious comment?

Who have behaved like the most selfish generation in history

Sorry what? The generation that fought a war? That generation? Talk about sweeping generalisations. I saw a mob of about 20 teenage boys on the street together... I’d like to know where their parents thought they were but I don’t make a ranty post condemning an entire generation. I am keen to get back to the gym but apparently the heat and moist air is perfect conditions for CV. I would happily do PT outside ( although quite frankly not with you )

and sod off with the ageism:

I'm 63 and I make my own choices, so long as they don't hurt anyone else
I wouldn't be tempted to drive across the country when ill, so maybe I'm safer than most

I'm retired, no family anywhere, no responsibilities
So far less consequence for me getting ill than someone with young kids to look after

I wonder if you'd have this view OP if you weren't financially impacted directly. Just sounds like an angry rant, it's an unfortunate situation which is going to impact certain sectors more than others.

Dozer
I did not make a comment on anybody dieing from covid 19
I stated “ those who might die from natural causes anyway”

This is intended as an intelligent fact based debate
If you have something concrete to offer that would be greatly valued as we are all struggling to make sense
Mumsnet is an intelligent board with intelligent posters

It you can read and understand a post your opinions are much appreciated
If your only input is to dismiss my views as “ shitty “ then I would greatly appreciate you directing you opinions to a less educated board or forum

Thankyou

Tara200 - you sound charming but I would work on your bedside manner if you are a fitness professional.

Wow. I know the OP’s comment to me was deleted but I see someone has quoted it.

I guess that would be me with my asthma or my singing teacher husband who would be expendable. (The research with regards to the spread and singing is terrifying). Lots of younger people have died. My daughters fantastic ballet teacher turned 70 a couple of weeks ago. She’s not British so couldn’t vote for Brexit. Her renowned jazz teacher must be in his 60’s by now. Yes they may be coming to the end of their careers but to needlessly put them through the suffering that is Covid. Wow.

Well as a vocal coach interested in how the voice & breathing works my husband has done a lot of research on how the different types of respiration affect the spread of droplets. Drama teacher groups I’m on are discussing how when the schools return indoor activities that involve physical exertion (getting out of breath) and vocal projection won’t be safe. I know fitness instructors often use head mics now but even so they are both projecting their voice over music/equipment etc

The firm I work with installed the air con in a new state of the art gym. It’s virtually impossible to artificially bring the ambient temperature down to a certain level on a very hot day if you have x number of bodies and equipment (the room in question was spinning machines). The room needs to be not too cold anyway because of keeping your muscles warm for certain activities. Then there is the air con itself and the direction it artificially moves the air around in an enclosed studio.

You need to adapt to the new market OP. Look for ways to train with people outside or over Zoom etc. Try not insulting potential customers, etc
