Except elected people are accountable to their electorate and can be held to account through deselection and re-election.

Many civil servants have a huge amount of power. That’s the way it works.

You don’t really think someone decides to become an mp and is suddenly capable of running the home office or the exchequer do you? These organisations are ran by very powerful people at the top. That’s how it works. They advise the government minister who is the figure head but they are in charge.

As for Cummings, he’s not secretly running the government for gods sake. And every single prime minister has had the same advisors, just different folks.

To be fair I can see what he’s done, make Cummings explain then say make your own minds up this is my decision, I’m not firing him, and then refuse to engage further. It would just drag on otherwise and they’ve both answered the questions, agree or disagree.

But Cummings isn’t unique in any way shape nor form, there has always been government advisors inc senior ones, it’s just this time we know who he is.

Every single prime minister has had a Cummings, a team of them, as does Boris.
